need to see Bound and (somehow, still) Speed Racer, not sure I care to try Cloud Atlas

there is really only one answer here and i think you know what it is.

watched reloaded and revolutions last saturday... the latter is such a pointless empty bore, i'd love to hear someone say a single interesting thing about it

a fourth The Matrix film, with Lana Wachowski directing alone, is supposedly slated for next year.

silby, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 04:46 (four years ago) link

anyway Jupiter Ascending is good not bad.

silby, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 04:48 (four years ago) link

If no one had taken The Matrix seriously as anything but silly entertainment it would be correctly valued for being quite entertaining, but silly. Alas, some people took it seriously and have done their damndest to ruin it.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 04:54 (four years ago) link

I didn’t know they had both transitioned! The answer to this is the first matrix!

I would've used to say The Matrix easily, but having seen Bound and Cloud Atlas (yes even this, a magnificent thing that doesn't quite work) in recent years, I'd say those are close. And Speed Racer and Jupiter Ascending are fun. I'll still watch anything they put out.

Elon's musk (sic), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 07:03 (four years ago) link

Cloud Atlas is a very successful adaptation imo - the book is an impressive and fun romp with pretensions to high art; the film dispenses with the pretensions.

a slice of greater pastry (ledge), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 10:47 (four years ago) link

I disagree; the pretensions are very much there ("the strong eat the weak!") but that's part of why I sorta love it?

Nhex, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 11:25 (four years ago) link

I can't tell if Cloud Atlas is a travesty-of-an-adaptation or if I was just wrong to love the book as I once did

I haven't seen Jupiter Ascending but I can safely say that the correct answer is Speed Racer

Oh and also I'd seriously probably voted for S1 of Sense8, were it an option

Speed Racer the most enjoyable, alongside The Matrix. Bound fine too. the rest i can do without.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 17:16 (four years ago) link

jupiter ascending is so batshit but there's something wrong with it that keeps it from being completely enjoyable. maybe it's edited weird? i need to watch it again

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 17:18 (four years ago) link

i still havent seen cloud atlas bc i wanted to read the book first. lol

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 17:19 (four years ago) link

idk if i'd be able to say anything interesting about matrix revolutions but i do love it; the subway set, neo's whole journey, the swelling vastness of the emotion during the battle scenes which are just visually staggering imo. i remember finding it disappointing when i was a teenager but now i just see a real commitment to spectacle and genuine earnest feeling. which is of course... perfected in speed racer

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 17:21 (four years ago) link

oh god and the fight with agent smith in the rain, god, that's kinda like the best shit ever

Re: Cloud Atlas. My opinion of David Mitchell has vastly changed over time... he's probably the most talented mimic I've ever read, number9dream is effectively a novel-length homage to Murakami and it ends up being better than any Murakami novel by a considerable margin. Ghostwritten has a very cool cyclical narrative, too. Ultimately, though, Black Swan Green is the only novel of his that I really loved, largely because it doesn't seem to be an exercise, it's pure coming-of-age narrative and it's really beautifully written and has a wonderful high-school dance scene that doesn't try too hard with its references and ends up being very charming (protagonist has a dance-floor epiphany to "Once In A Lifetime").

Jacob De Zoet is ok if you have a high tolerance for people who would use the word "Nihonophile" in casual conversation.

Cloud Atlas is a series of homages, iirc, and it's impressive to read but ultimately hugely unsatisfying-- especially, for me, after having been moved so much by Mitchell playing it straight with "Black Swan Green". It's also very immersive and very dense, everybody I know who has read it has kind of disappeared into it for a week of non-stop turning of pages

The Wachowski's decision to cast the same actors in multiple parts in Cloud Atlas really fucking sucked imo both in concept and execution, I feel like it was intended to be an argument for non-essentialism but it ended up being awkward and at times embarrassing

I fucking loved Sense8 though and I'm gonna watch it again

tbh the only reason I liked Matrix Revolutions was because Cornel West was deep in his starfucker mode when it came out and his character got killed

DJP, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 19:31 (four years ago) link

I agree with Sense 8 deserving a place in any poll like this; it is quintessential Wachowski and one of the desperate few if not sole honestly interesting and worthwhile "Netflix originals" (of which there is an unbearable sea of almost nothing but unmitigated trash otherwise). Far from flawless like the rest of their catalog, but similarly those imperfections and that messiness is a big part of what makes it special and truly unlike virtually anything else in television today or otherwise. Easily one of the best pieces of Queer art of the 2010s, infinitely more interesting and compelling than some of the dreadfully boring and tedious nonsense that happened to receive more think piece attention and acclaim like "Looking", and way more brazen and honest in its LGTBQ representation and exploration than most of those types of shows/films ever dared to imagine (in my opinion).

Of this poll, I can enjoy a sit through of all of these except the final Matrix film, but I think Speed Racer is the easy choice. Ironically and unironically amazing, easily the most visually astounding blockbuster of the 2000s. Definitely deserves reappraisal and revaluation for those who might've ignored or wrote it off back when it was released. In a post Parasite, post Enter the Void/Annihilation/Fury Road world where its kaleidoscopic visual schizophrenia and defiantly anti-capitalist undertones are now the critically and popularly acclaimed norm it would be a much more appreciated phenomenon. It's taken over a decade but its slowly starting to finally garner at least some of that cult reverence it rightfully always deserved but was denied upon release, where it was mercilessly crushed under the weight of Iron Man and the ensuing MCU/comic book tentpole tidal wave that modern blockbuster cinema is still obviously deeply submerged in. Also the GOAT live action anime/manga adaptation, Edge of Tomorrow and the old Lone Wolf and Cub films being the only others of any worth off the top of my head.

Cloud Atlas is a fucking mess of a movie that somehow kind of works although I can't say it's "good". It's one of my favorite novels of recent years and while the movie more or less gets the points across, the pretensions in the book are a big part of why it's enjoyable. Anyway the answer to this is the Matrix (1) and almost all of the others are terrible, though I really liked Bound back in the 90's.

I watched Speed Racer on the strength of you guys recommendation and I'm sorry to say I didn't like it much. Everything felt separated, disjointed and actors look like they're talking to nobody or rehearsing their lines to a mirror. The aesthetic and the races were quite good at times but I never felt it was reaching the right level and the little brother + ape were just tiresome. The only total success for me was Susan Sarandon blazing like a furnace of archetypal milf energy.

Nhex, Thursday, 18 February 2021 21:31 (three years ago) link

what, did the prevailing anticapitalism seem hollow? or the heightened oversaturated nonstop green screen aesthetic which in a lesser movie would be calling attention to its own artificiality and stylization but in speed racer is just the sensuous and hyperchromatic world it lives in? could you not feel that world bursting apart and recombining pixel by pixel every time a car accelerated

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 February 2021 21:39 (three years ago) link

i will admit that every time the side intrigue between racer x and rain starts i'm like "i forgot this was in the movie," but i think it all fits together nicely and i would like the movie less if it were less needlessly complex
