Was he the bearer of a profound wisdom or another eastern mystic taking advantage of gullible westerners?

I don't think he was taking advantage. He could probably have had an even more comfortable existence as the Messiah (or World Teacher, or whatever they would have called it) the Theosophists groomed him to be as a child and young man.

what did he actually do when he dumped the Theosophists?

I know very little about Krishnamurti, but what I do know is fascinating: plucked from obscurity as a child to be the Theosophist messiah, probably sexually abused by leading male Theosophist, in adult life repudiates Theosophy but hangs onto the idea that he is some kind of messiah (or great soul, or whatever).

I have *the* actual chair from the Theosophical Society, the one all visiting speaker would sit it. It's fairly comfortable, but I can understand why Krishnamurti had a problem with it.
