Before yesterday, I had never encountered the term 'base' used in regard to any part of a pizza. This may be attributed to the infrequency with which I hold detailed conversations about the component parts of pizzas, or it may be that the term 'base' is an outlier, employed only by certain sub-cultures of pizza consumers I had not yet interacted with, as a member of the dominant pizza culture.

qft, considering crust to be all areas that include dough is crazy talk
likewise, calling the underside of the pizza the "base" is like talking about how attractive the "back skin" on a person is. it's creepy and wrong. the "base" is just the underside of the pizza; further differentiation is unnecessary.

Basers, is it your position that the kids in this classic advert were asking the pizza man merely to hold the EDGE of the pizza, rather than all of the dough? If that were the case, Polly-o String Cheese would be cheesebread.

And here I thought I'd said all I had to say about this in the other thread...

I think the basers need to provide a more robust crust taxonomy to really differentiate all the gradations of crust from one another. Next they can tell us about the "fromunda-crust", that transitional area between the "base" and crust where the sauce starts to get thin.

emil.y, Thursday, 28 May 2020 17:42 (five years ago)

idk here in civilisation 'sauce' really is one of many potential toppings. not every pizza requires sauce; every pizza requires toppings. cheese is a topping. if you have a marinara, the tomato, basil and oil puree is a topping

In the parlance of the pizza parlors of my recent acquaintance “base” of the pizza is the sauce or other liquid phase substance that goes on top of the crust, such as pizza sauce, white sauce, or olive oil.
