What Happened to Tarpits?

It seems like in prehistoric times a lot of a caveman's time (and that of the animals around w/him) was spent avoiding the deadly TARPIT. What happened to all these things? Is that where we get tar from now? Why were they so dangerous then and so not now? There's probably a really simple answer to this but I'm very tired and it's bugging me a bit.

There's one down the street from where I work on Wilshire Blvd. in LA - the La Brea tarpits (which translated means something like "the the tar tar pits" - never let it be said Los Angelenos don't have the capacity for redundancy). It smells and the tar oozes up through the street, but the worst part is the statues of wooly mammoths - a mother and baby on the shore, watching the father mammoth slowly sink into the tar... Take your kids!!

But doom and death is fun!

*penny drops* Hey wait, you're in LA? Or have we discussed this before? The need for an LA FAP becomes clearer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"this is what happens to naughty mammoths who wander away from their families - make sure you keep up, kid"

I'm not sure if we've discussed it before, Ned, but I'm not really sure I brought my head with me this morning, either, so it's entirely possible. Rah FAP!

Yus! Maybe something over Thanksgiving weekend? I'll be busy on the Friday, admittedly...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)
