Eminem - He has movie now

Can he spread his evil everywhere? Someone I heard recently call his "The Elvis of Rap". He sounds like an obnoxious little prick with no talent babbling about topics he knows will offend. Can you make him go away?

Mike Hanle y (mike), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The movie really surprised me. One stupid sex scene aside, it was really, REALLY great.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it was way better than i expected (the sex scene was ludicrous though)! he can definitely act (ok, so he's practically playing himself, but even so...).

toby (tsg20), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

My housemate came back from it the other night and was fairly down on it -- the exact line was, "He won't win any Oscars!" She more enjoyed the audience members who were getting into the film, apparently they were quite vocal. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Im scared since even the papers that normally trash him aren't for the movie. Still I'm going to Harry Potter first.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Eminem won't win any Oscars for playing himself, but the battle scenes are GREBT. Really, going into that movie to see how well Eminem acts kind of misses the point of the movie IMO.

I definitely have more respect for him as an emcee after seeing the movie.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, this is the Urgent and Key question -- so is it a new Purple Rain or not?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the new "Private Parts"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Its the new "The Tommy Steele Story".

Pete (Pete), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The sex scene was awesome. In the theatre where I watched it some dude shouted out "Two Minute Man" when it concluded!

Also apparently Em and the actress (Brittney somethingorrather) had an on-set romance.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna see this, it looks good from what I've seen and I've heard bits of the soundtrack which sounds promising too
Mr noodles, I saw Harry Potter yesterday, it's better than the first one but little children got fwightened, beware. Dont go if you don't like spiders 'n' snakes.

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The claim that it's a new "Rocky" is much more accurate. There aren't enough musical segues for it to be the new "Purple Rain". There is a lot of a capella freestyling, though, which is CLASSIC.

During the sex scene, I turned to Joei and said, "I guess they kind of had to go out after all that." She larfed and larfed.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

harry potter is the elvis of rub

mark s (mark s), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s - Not if you are a 7 year old girl it ain't. You've been reading them Jack Chick track thingies haven't you?

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

How does it compare to Sir Cliff's efforts in the cinematographic field?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Brittney somethingorrather

*choked coughing fit*

zebedee, Monday, 11 November 2002 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

phew, that's better

it's brittany murphy, dude!

(actually I think it's great how nobody recognises her from one movie to the next)

zebedee, Monday, 11 November 2002 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard he and Kim Basinger had a thing.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard he and Mekhi Phifer ... are just good friends

Jeff W, Monday, 11 November 2002 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard that he and Dr Dre know each other.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

dude the romance thing is true -- I saw it on Entertainment Tonight.

also why the hell should I recognize ms. Murphy -- I mean is that supposed to be an illustrious career or something or am I just alone in never having watched much Blossom and Sister, Sister?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it as good as:
a) Crossroads?
b) Queen Of The Damned?
c) A Walk To Remember?
d) Glitter?

Graham (graham), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Brittney Murphy has been in like 100 movies, what the hell? I think you'd at least recognize her from Clueless, Sterling, that's right up your alley. I'm surprised you aren't a big Sister Sister fan.

Nothing is as good as Queen of the Damned, I mean what the hell was going on in that movie? We drove to frigging New Hampshire just to see it which was probably the highlight. Lestat looked like Joaquim Phoenix or whatever, he was brilliant.

Seriously I'm going to go see this tonight, I was going to go this weekend and it, ahem, didn't work out. It looks brill, I mean hello, Curtis Hanson?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Clueless is crap because it is based on Jane Austin. The only dude who ever stood a chance of directing a good jane austin flik is roman polanski.

Queen Of The Damned totally trumps but there are a few real "oh shit that rabbit dude is hella scary" moments where em shines like the freakiest bits of the Marshall Mathers LP.

Also nabisco is dead on about the updike ref.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The translations from Jane Austen to Clueless were clever (he is engaged ==> he is gay; they are set upon by vagabonds in the wood ==> they are set upon by vandals at the mall)

I liked 8 Mile, even though it could have been a lot more experiemental, given Em's leverage (like in baseball, "not trying to do too much"). (err, six people in red rain jackets on pink scooters just drove down Ninth Avenue in formation). What was I saying? anyway, this sounds trite but I liked how he took his anticipated criticisms in the battle scene and turned them around. People should do this more often. I liked the slow friend. I expected Curtis Hanson's direction to be a little more stylized. The little sister relationship was cloying. Brittany Murphy's acting was terrible. Em's acting was quite affecting, I thought.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they should make a movie about the people in the rain jackets on scooters! I wish I saw that. I always see this little old woman on a vespa with a dog in a basket who is wearing a helmet (the dog not the woman). It's totally weird.

Anyway, I am pleased I have found the one juvenile thing that Sterling does NOT like because I was starting to fear he blanketly likes all things that are, um, little girlish. HOORAY FOR ME on my unbirthday.

Um, I have taken too much medication today.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It was really not bad, I was expecting that feeling the plot mechanism working would bother me a whole lot, and it didn't. The little sister = not good, nor the scene where he's defending the gay man, but.. otherwise, quite tolerable, didn't patch everything up neatly at the end, which is a +.

By the way, when Kim Basinger shows up and says she has won $3200 at bingo, I didn't buy it, did anyone else think there was clearly something else implied there ?

daria g, Monday, 11 November 2002 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought that, but I also thought that it showed exactly the dead-end she was locked in; she won at bingo ONCE and now all of her problems are solved. At least until next month. Why didn't she get a job?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally I am totally not twee. I mean I have no stuffed animals and dislike hello kitty and was just listening to "thug holiday" by trick daddy and i mean.. christ you like a few teen movies and some pop and next thing you know.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the dog has a helmet? what kind of dog?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to this film with my new bingo partners, and our reaction was "Whoa!! Can you win that much?" KB is our new Bingo Saint.

Brittany Murphy = Luanne on King of the Hill. She was looking rather poorly in this film. What skinny, skinny legs!

This is the second film I have seen in a week that had a "How can you fight at a time like this, Character X is in the hospital ?!?" scene.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(b.murphy was great in the great cherry falls)

jones (actual), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a poodle dog and it wears a helmet. There is also an army of pugs somewhere in my neighborhood, and also a crazy cat man. He's got like 40 of them, and they stand outside wandering around being cute outside the Italian restaurant. Sometimes I used to play with them when I was waiting for a table but now I know better because they might have rabies or something similar. Also I don't go there so much anymore anyway.

Heh heh heh, no one called you twee per se Mr. CLover.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the exact line was, "He won't win any Oscars!"

Surely a ringing endorsement?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Not in the context given. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What if he was played by Tom Hanks?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you for giving me a NEW NIGHTMARE to replace all the old, boring ones, Ally.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Dan, what if Enimen was played by Pauly Shore?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ARGH. Although, it would be worse if Pauly played the Brittany Murphy character, because then there'd be a Pauly Shore/Tom Hanks love scene.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The next step of bootlegging -- movie mixes!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Just saw this. I thought that except for the rap throwdowns (which weren't even that great) it was pretty standard-issue "scrappy individualist rises above adversity" stuff. Not to say that it wasn't engrossing -- but the script was full of cliches and most of the important characters were under-written. But I liked the way the Detroit locations were used, esp. the Michigan Theater.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The throwdowns made the whole movie. The best scenes were the group in the parking garage and the ending battle.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget the one with Xzibit by the roach coach!

felicity (felicity), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That was good, but not as great as the parking garage throwdown.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

in which the slow friend plays a critical role

felicity (felicity), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

8 mile: classic or dud?

i vote classic and i haven't even seen it yet

geeta, Monday, 11 November 2002 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I always see this little old woman on a vespa with a dog in a basket who is wearing a helmet (the dog not the woman).

A Washington-area motorcyclist used to take his cat along on rides (the cat died earlier this year). Both human and feline always wore their helmets. I'd say that they made a sweet pair, but that sounds a little too twee.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and with that, Mike had the last word

Mike Hanle y (mike), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Not so fast.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Eminem's pretty cute, eh?

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I like him better with brown hair than with blonde.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

he is cute, but he has kind of an extreme ball on the end of his nose from certain angles, like the Puck in my high school Midsummer Night's Dream.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha -- I noticed the big nose, and it also came to mind during the Cyrano-esque throwdown scene at the end where he insults himself six ways to Sunday so his opponent has nothing left to use against him.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Eminem the modern Steve Martin?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"I had my cock shortened..."

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Jody, Papa Doc should have rapped about Rabbit's big nose! That would have been telling him something about himself he didn't already know.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, was that intentional up there where Ally turned Sterling into C-Lover?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Cee-Lova, spawn of gross mental image involving Cee-Lo and Jay-Z.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to fight ALL my battles via freestyling from now on. 8 Mile has INSPIRED ME. It's the only way to win the war against terrorism.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 14 November 2002 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
i liked it

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't, although I wanted to, especially because a lot of the supporting cast were really quite good, and seemed to me to deserve a back story that the writer and director couldn't have been arsed to give them. But Eminem's ".mumble. .mumble. !!!SCREAMSCREAMSCREAM!!!" acting techniques were only exceeded in awfulness by Ms. Basinger's "Self-debasement wins me Oscars!" mugging. The cinematography was terrific, and made Detroit look gloriously godawful -- but, shit, praising the supporting cast and cinematography in a rap movie is a bit like praising the make-up artist in a porn flick -- you came to see throw-downs, and the crappy plot made it necessary that two of the miserly three you were given were very low-key. So as good as the final battle was, it was insufficient compensation for the flat grey melodrama that preceeded it.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
My thoughts:

1) I liked the sense of detachment that Rabbit had.
2) I felt ultimately that the central characters struggle was for self respect, and that this was the over riding moral message of the film: getting respect from others is good, but it doesn't mean much if you don't respect yourself. It's sort of rebel with a cause.
3) This message overlaps with that of Star Trek Nemesis, in that Data desires to better himself.
4) The love angle was unnecessary, and I am glad that he didn't fall into her arms at the end of the movie.
5) The ending was very good.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The love angle was really pointless, it seemed really to be little more than a plot spur for 'Em to actually get up and start doing things which kind of conflicted with the whole you need self respect yrself or it's all pointless kind of the thing because it seemed to me the only reason he actually faced anything was when the brittany murphy character spurred him on.

The little sister was pretty pointless too. She wasn't really fleshed out at all and was kind of pointless except they seemed to use her as the spur for a little moralising on the harsh realities of trailerpark/ghetto lifestyle type things.

Apart from that i thought it was grate, especially the ending and em was far from brilliant but he didn't ruin the movie or anything and's a lot better than most other music stars in movie role.

Okay the sex scene is completely anti-hot, Bunny Rabbit is the gayest name ever but still

THIS MOVIE FUCKING OWNZ!!

I just, finally, watched the DVD and fell in love all over again. I don't know what happened on the oscars and don't really care. (NEWSFLASH - LOSE YRSELF WON!! YEEE HAWWW!)

Not only are the battle scenes supreme, not only does eminem melt my wax, but, sadly, the dealio with his home life rings poignently true with my past.

"Why you gotta be like this? What did we ever do to you?"
Those lines bespeak the truth of my adolescence and pain me with their accuracy.

what a great fucking movie. . .

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

this came out here just a couple weeks ago. mark s's "i liked it" will suffice. for felicity, some proboscis-related em musings: "now don't ignore me, you won't avoid me, you can't miss me, I'm white, blonde-haired and my nose is pointy"

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

also am i alone in liking the sex scene for its clumsiness?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wait, there's sterl..

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't it a little sad tho that em still needed to play the class card in his bid for authenticity?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

When I rented it with friends who'd just seen it the other day (they were re-renting it to make up for forgetting that I hadn't seen it, having mis-remembered my seeing Moonlight Mile), they basically watched it to gauge my reactions to it (I dug it) -- except for the sex scene, when they couldn't help blurting out, "I love that it's so clumsy!"

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Trying to picture "8 Mile" without "the class card"...

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it'd be Josie and the Pussycats with random scenes borrowed from Flashdance.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

well yeah, working class frustration/stratification etc was the emotional core of 8 mile, but i'd've liked an ending that didn't drive home the notion of pain as the white rapper's only chance at cred. i asked this ages ago on ilm, but is the world ready for a feelgood white rapper? was 'lose yourself' a way forward?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Every time I see the title of this thread I laugh out loud.

is the world ready for a feelgood white rapper?

My time is finally upon us...muahahaha!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd've liked an ending that didn't drive home the notion of pain as the white rapper's only chance at cred

That's not how I saw the ending -- to me it was the more basic, "Shoot for your dreams, great, and find meaning in them, but don't quit your day job," countering all the "and then the talent scout discovered him and it was smooth sailing from there!" endings of similar movies.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

don't get me wrong, the motivational bit at the end manipulated me in all the right places and i think there's probably a sturdy message there, but i'm relistening to all the freestyles on mp3, and clarence's parents have a real good marriage followed by uproarious crowd laughter got me thinking...

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that part of the ending ... I was thinking of after that when he heads back to work instead of celebrating his victory. Okay, yeah, the whole pain/street cred thing plays a huge part in the last battle. I think it could've been resolved without that, so now I'm curious to hear the audio commentary (I assume the DVD has an ac track, given all the other stuff on it) and see if they talk about it.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait: do you think the sex was clumsy or the sex scene was staged clumsily?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The sex was clumsy, the scene was staged perfectly (well, "very well," anyway).

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I saw this last night and was very entertained by it, in a Rocky-sorta way. But I was also pretty surprised by it. I'd heard the movie was pretty old-fashioned, but I really couldn't believe just how old-fashioned it was. Period details aside 8 Mile was really the kind of underdog movie that could've been made any time in the last sixty years.

I was also pretty into the movie's visual style too. I'd heard it praised by critics & such as gritty and realistic, but I thought it was the opposite, totally composed and over-the-top. I guess it was shot on location but it really reminded me of West Side Story. This is not intended as a criticism of the movie; I liked how it looked like a big studio production.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 28 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though he didn't actually get the girl (except for those 5 steamy minutes) or the wealth and fame (except among the local crews)?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but it was so set up that he would get the wealth and the fame; I don't think there was any question at all. The Brittany Murphy stuff was kind of weird though; I couldn't really tell what the hell she was supposed to be all about.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Surely the whole deal is that after all that B. Rabbit transforms into the "real" Eminem. Why else set the film in '95?

(Just saw this last night).
