Godard: 45 films
Fassbinder: 40 films
Similar arcs, but in reverse: Godard starts with the most accessible run of films he'd ever make, only to stop in 1968 and dive headfirst into polemics, experiments, and esotericism. Fassbinder begins in 1968-70 with roughly a dozen austere and political art films, clearly inspired by Straub and Godard's post-68 work, and (generally speaking) Fassbinder grows more accessible as his career goes on.
I wanted to do this poll because the one from several years ago, Tarkovsky vs. Fassbinder, is a serious mismatch imo. Godard and Fassbinder is a much more interesting conversation, especially since they have so much in common and their treasured runs (i.e. Fassbinder's entire career) came in consecutive decades.
Biggest difference to me is the emotional tenor and content of the work. Godard's starting point is almost never pure emotion, he's the impersonal philosopher/theorist, whereas Fassbinder starts with emotion and works from there.
It's an easy question for me, though I love both. Fassbinder's films are just so dense and rewarding and remain ripe for years. This is true of many Godard films, but he never could've made something as transcendent and from the gut as In a Year with 13 Moons.
