Nothing good is on TV / No one falls in love with me

[this is one of several ILE questions that occurred to me when drunk last week. I wrote them down on a scrap of paper and this one appears to make the second-least sense so here it is.]

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nobody is going to fall in love with you if you're sat on your arse watching TV, is the flaw here. Good song though.

Tom, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Staying home I like to think if I made an effort the world would be mine. Actually, I too have been thinking about potential ILe questions, but they all turn out like problems page questions like "how do I tell if someone fancies me?". But, I don't post them.

The ideal = love and watching TV together, oh dear.

Maybe, I'm not the best person to take this post to any sort of intellectual or profound level. But, I tried.

jel, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think we should do a thread where only lurkers can post. That should bring out a few people out of the closet so to speak.

nathalie, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can someone remind me of the song in question, at least?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lonely Days (The Future Bible Heroes).

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*scrounges* An album I actually have, at that.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Scrounges'?

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Love and watching TV together" - this has nearly done for my relationship on a number of occasions due to her TV watching mode being more-or-less rapt attention and involvement in plot and mine being constant snidey carping, except for POP ON TV where the dynamic is reversed.

Tom, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Incidentally jel I VERY MUCH THINK you should post that thread.

Tom, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To scrounge, as in to search around and see if I have the damn thing. And as I have one FBH album and that song is on it, there we are.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will post said question, captain!

jel, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

With all respect to Nathalie and Nick, I have never worked out why if I was a self-respecting lurker and proud of my lurker status, I would de-lurk just because somebody said "Hey lurkers post here".

Tom, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Though, the lurker post would be a good place to use an unknown e- mail address and post comments in support of yourself...like "jel is so cool, the stupid things he says make my day"...Ok, it crossed my mind for a second.

jel, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am delighted that my lurker thread = feeble hypothesis is being so amply proved, with 3 responses from already-familiar posters including the #4 on the stats cock for pitys sake and Mel whose last thread was "Should I Post More?" (to which the answer remains yes. But on lurkers-only thread? Come off it.)

As I think Duane once pointed out, THERE ARE NO LURKERS ON ILE. Do you honestly imagine that someone would read all this stuff and not feel able to join in?

Tom, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ha! #4 on the SC's avuncular and encouraging intervention [which was in brackets so as not to chafe at stated thread requirements] has already created atmosphere conducive to member of allegedly non-existent species proudly announcing self

mark s, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Curses! Foiled by my own girlfriend and her anthony-esque spelling ways.

[square brackets != invisibility, also]

Tom, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am offended. Or i would be if i knew what you were talking about.

anthony, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I started posting about five minutes after I found the board. I have never understood the draw of lurking.

Lyra, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, being a poster, it is harder to understand why someone would rather lurk. But I can understand it. Sort of. Lurking can be much easier. The first time I posted, I just wanted to crawl under the desk. Why? Because you expose yourself (to criticism). I thought:"Oh my gosh, they will just tell me to bugger off, that I have no place here." There will probably be lurkers. Still I think they'll probably be occasional visitors.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YES YES! A person delurked on the Just Lurker thread. I think that's great. More people should. Just post and let us know why you lurk. Then realize how silly it is and start posting like mad so you become the top of the stats list. :-)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To be honest, when I posted this thread I was hoping that someone might contradict the first part of the statement by pointing me in the direction of some good TV.

Nick, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The sixth season of Buffy is starting on Thursday on BBC 2?

jel, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Buffy is in love with me.

mark s, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well since Eastenders went bad by going 4 nights a week and the new season of Bad Girls doesn't start till at least next year I fear that the search for love is more likely to be fruitful than the search for good TV.

Emma, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If new Buffy is on on Thursday, I shall watch and see if it's improved. It may have just been going through a bad patch after they graduated.

DG, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does Buffy on Thursdays mean Mark S. is free to come out on Fridays? (Though since Thursday is the New Friday anyway this may make no difference to his social life.)

Tom, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No: Friday unfreeness = nothing to do with Buffy, except of course in the grand scheme of thingZoR (where everything = everything else) (which i shd not have mentioned as iz confusing and unhelpful).

It is not Narcotics AnonyMouse btw...

mark s, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Friends is on Friday...Jennifer Aniston is in love with Mark S.

Notting Hill 2: A Hackney Romance?

Nick, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have an unfortunate association of the word "scrounge" and digging in your pants pockets for change. I now also have an unfortunate mental image of Ned walking around with a CD library in his pants. (This must be why the ladies love him so.)

Dan Perry, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes she is — in fact they ALL are, which is the only reason why they have dragged the pesky show out so far beyond its natural lifespan – but that is not the reason. If that had been the reason I would have told you. Obviously.

mark s, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmm...thank you, Dan, a good ego boost.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My friend informs me that everything on TV is good, and everyone I know is in love with me. Where's the problem?

Ally C, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Notting Hill 2: A Hackney Romance?

Or a hackneyed romance.
