I will vote in your poll. (Also who doesn’t read ILX by SNA, anyway?)

Lipstick O.G. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 11 July 2020 23:51 (five years ago)

Porgy & Bess! which doesn't actually have an exclamation mark in the title like My other fave Ella Verve album Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!

calzino, Sunday, 12 July 2020 00:19 (five years ago)

I Got Plenty O' Nuttin is my theme song!

calzino, Sunday, 12 July 2020 00:25 (five years ago)

ha !

also one of my favorite interpretation of "it ain't necessarily so"

my vote is for P&G for sure, it's been in my life for a long time and i have a fond memory of buying the CD from a guy on the street in NYC and playing it on my discman non-stop for a few weeks one summer.

trenchant!

calzino, Sunday, 12 July 2020 01:30 (five years ago)

Ella and Louis Again is generally quite breezy and nice but it sounds like in the first verse Louis is singing "the rain will bring the violence of men, tears are in vain" which would be very otm nihilistic goth end-times commentary for now.

calzino, Sunday, 12 July 2020 01:41 (five years ago)

oops I meant on the opening verse of Don't Be That Way

calzino, Sunday, 12 July 2020 01:48 (five years ago)

the rain will bring the violence of men

can't un-hear this now

Buddy Rich is on drums for the first one, a seldom-discussed fact I like to bring up when people dismiss him. It's cool to hear him in a totally supportive ballad mode.

one month passes...

Rhonda Hamilton seems to be back on WBGO. Since Louis Armstrong's birthday is apparently actually this month, other claims to the contrary, she's playing a lot of Louis and Ella today.
