xp Andy the Grasshopper, i ordered that EXACT image as a poster, in late january 2019. i fully intended to hang it in my workspace. by the time it arrived, i was at a new job which was already inappropriate for hanging that kind of poster. on top of that, the soft cube lining i could have hung it on was too small (not tall enough) - which part do you cut off, the crucial claw hanging onto the rope, or the "hang in there!" at the bottom? i considered folding it mad magazine style, horizontally, across the middle, just before covid hit and we all started working from home

I used to sell that kitten poster in the mid 90s in a hellish job I had back then.Working for a rip off poster guy.
So it's been around a while.
Obviously still has a message that works though.
So some memes predate the massive influx of social media.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 19 September 2020 06:37 (four years ago) link
That poster is the proto-meme, the image from which all subsequent memes sprang.

the original "hang in there, baby" kitten poster (a different kitten and photo) was published in 1971 after the uncaptioned pic had gained popularity in a 1970 book and ads for Cat Fancy. the concept of memes was named in Dawkins' The Selfish Gene in 1976.

Keep On Truckin is absolutely a meme, especially if we're not misusing "meme" to mean a photo with all caps Impact text added

George Orwell wrote a long essay about the humorous postcards sold to English tourists at seaside resorts. They also fit the current mold of internet memes. It seems like the current use of 'meme' in daily life has narrowed quite a lot since Dawkins floated the idea, to where now it only applies to trivialities, the ephemeral dust and lint of Facebook chatter, not durable mental constructs.

Speaking of frozen in amber, does anyone know why Mrs. Dash dropped the "Mrs."? I'm not buying the old "new look, same great taste"... there has to be a seedy, nefarious story behind it.
― Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 21 September 2020 19:26 (four years ago) link
They focus-grouped it and found the "Mrs." was deemed too stodgy by the under-35 participants they wanted to attract, but "Ms." was too radical for the over-50 segment that were the most loyal customers. Then, in a stoke of pure marketing genius someone said, "why not just 'Dash'?" The clouds parted, a beam of light fell through and lit up the speaker with brilliant light. The other marketers in the room swooned and "Dash" was born.

Old Bay isn't likely to change. It's named after a Chesapeake ferry line of the early 1900s, and its assumed antiquity is part of the appeal.
I've no issues with Mrs. Dash -> Dash. As someone distant from brand marketing, it's a bit strange that no seasoning product labeled "Sprinkle", as with Japanese furikake, has ever taken off and gotten the "Kleenex/Xerox/Band-aid" acclaim as a generic name. Bragg (the hydrolyzed soy protein co) has a "Sprinkle" product, but I assume that as it never took off that its either poorly marketed or fairly bad.

Apparently it's not as old as you'd think.. early 1980's. "Before settling on the name "Mrs. Dash," the company considered the name "Mrs. Pinch."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Dash
― Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 21:09 (four years ago) link
Mrs. Dash is a brand name of seasoning that was introduced in 1983 and was marketed by B&G Foods. The product line was originally developed by Carol Bernick, now Executive Chairwoman of the company. In the 1980s, while a marketing executive at the firm, she was frustrated with the products available to flavor the meals she prepared at home for her family. She invented a salt-free blend of her own to fill the need for a convenient way to flavor the food without using salt. The original formula, which was first marketed in 1981, was developed with a variety of spice suppliers. Before settling on the name "Mrs. Dash," the company considered the names "Mrs. Pinch," "Mrs. Marketing Executive," "Frustrated Carol's Family Flavoring Mix," and "Bernick Family Proprietary Salt Substitute Powder."
