Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard it on good authority that Sean Connery prefers Elvish.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I helped destroy the credibility of a guy I sang with in college by convincing everyone that he was fluent in Klingon.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

They have Klingon camp in Alberta so Elvish is cooler and therefore it is proven by science, better.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll go for the one actually created by someone who studied languages. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Miles Hunt prefers Klingon. He never loved Elvish.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGH.

Actually, the only reason Nicole asked this question is that her boy toy probably is fluent in both. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

come on, surely the real question is Sindar v. Quenya.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll go for the one actually created by someone who studied languages

Yeah. Human languages he studied though. Which I would imagine would be a positive bar to thinking in the language and culture of a difference species.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

But then this gets into the whole question of what manner of creation Elves and Dwarves and etc. are in the whole legendarium and... *continues on for an hour or so*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

MGM-era elvish!! ...oh. shorry.

jones (actual), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

elvish nevah meant shit to me ahahaha

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely "elvish nevah meant sit to me"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you prefer spindly Elvish or bold, broad Elvish?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

spindly, since the elvish are neither bold or broad.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

My oldest friend and I met a couple of people once who were very keen to point out that they had learnt Klingon. We were enthusing about how useful it would be if they were ever kidnapped and kept together, and needed a secret language that their kidnappers didn't understand. They could tell we were being mocking and got very annoyed, but obviously the only people in whom the kind of losers who learn Klingon ever inspire fear is their own families.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

more people speak klingon then about 140 native languages.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I once saw Klingons buying pizza in the foodcourt of the Kingston Centre.

I'll bet Elves would only eat at Yogenfruz.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Elvez, on the other hand, would probably make a beeline for Burger King.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll go for the one actually created by someone who studied languages.

Both languages were created by linguists. Elvish by J.R.R. Tolkien and Klingon by Marc Okrand. Nice comparison though... Elvish was created with the idea that it should be as mellifluous as possible, while Klingon was designed to be as unpleasant and difficult to pronounce as possible. They're two sides of the same coin, really.

"In line with the policies of the most logical race in the universe - the Vulcans - breeding will only be permitted once every seven years. For you, that's much less. For me, much much more."

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Top 15 Elvish languages:

Eldarin
Lemberin
Lindarin
Noldorin
Telerin
Quenya
Ingwiquenya
Kornoldorin
Doriathrin
Falassian
Danian
Gondolic
Ossiriandic
Beleriandic
Leikvian

Hah! beat that, Klingons.

Mooro (Mooro), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

The BEST part of going to sci-fi conventions is going to the dance club (or better yet, the strip bar) and seeing Klingons and elves gettin' their freak on. It's priceless.
