Mr. Trump received the test result after one of his closest advisers, Hope Hicks, became infected, bringing the virus into his inner circle and underscoring the difficulty of containing it even with the resources of a president.

xps:How Stuff Works: What Happens if a Presidential Candidate Dies?
Before the Electoral College meets: new candidate chosen by party. It doesn't have to be the vice-presidential candidate. Before inauguration: covered by succession rules under 20th amendment. VP-elect becomes President-elect.
― Sanpaku, Friday, 2 October 2020 08:25 (four years ago)
Seems bizarre outcomes are possible, eg: Trump loses the popular vote but has an edge in the electoral college, dies before the Electoral College meets, the GOP puts Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz on the Electoral College ballot, and if their electors are faithful or Biden has unfaithful electors, someone who wasn't on any 2016 ticket could get in. One would hope that would be the death knell for the Electoral College...

Aside from poetic justice, isn't this actually terrible news? If he's lying, which could be the case, and could be covered up easily, he could make a "miraculous recovery", further enabling his fantasy 'everything is fine' narratives. If he is sick and survives, he'll sail to victory on a sympathy vote. If he is sick and dies, another Republican will sail to victory on a sympathy vote (and a de-energized left who are already only voting for Biden begrudgingly).

WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump was sicker with Covid-19 in October than publicly acknowledged at the time, with extremely depressed blood oxygen levels at one point and a lung problem associated with pneumonia caused by the coronavirus, according to four people familiar with his condition. His prognosis became so worrisome before he was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that officials believed he would need to be put on a ventilator, two of the people familiar with his condition said. The people familiar with Mr. Trump’s health said he was found to have lung infiltrates, which occur when the lungs are inflamed and contain substances such as fluid or bacteria. Their presence, especially when a patient is exhibiting other symptoms, can be a sign of an acute case of the disease. They can be easily spotted on an X-ray or scan, when parts of the lungs appear opaque, or white.Mr. Trump’s blood oxygen level alone was cause for extreme concern, dipping into the 80s, according to the people familiar with his evaluation. The disease is considered severe when the blood oxygen level falls to the low 90s.

The fact that he was able to pursue a fairly demanding campaign schedule in late October strongly suggests the experimental therapies he received were obviously effective. Sure, Trump's death would have been more satisfactory, but I guess I should look at the bigger picture and settle for this silver lining, that if Trump was saved from death or debility, it's possible some far more worthy humans may greatly benefit from similar therapies in the future.

I’m pissed off by this revive of that moment & the reminder that we could have been spared the whole lame duck period & subsequent insurrection if he had just done the reasonable thing & kicked it. Remembering that period, when COVID in the US was taking off like a rocket & all anyone was talking about was “The severity of the pandemic is Trump’s fault and WHY won’t he & the cons just wear a damn mask” & when he got the Vid it was like THIS IS WHAT YOU SOWED, NOW REAPand the disappointment when he did not in fact reap, which took the wind out of the anti-Trump momentum — just a bit, but enough to notice. The stupidest thing about that If/Trump video is that it was billed as a "tribute to his accomplishments", but the video clips just showed him walking around in various places, waving vaguely at either people or trees or walls - it wasn't always easy to tell -, with zero hint of any accomplishments of any kind. They didn't even show his big beautiful border wall. Apparently his great accomplishment consisted of walking and waving without tripping over his feet.

the thing that really made my heart sink was after Trump got Covid a whole host of cable/late night hosts from Chris Hayes to Stephen Colbert to basically everyone on CNN said something to the effect of "we wish him and Melania a speedy recovery"
maybe it was just for appearances and to not play into the "evil liberals want Trump to DIE!" narrative but it still was sickening. the man is singlehandedly responsible for getting a quarter million people killed. he's made life worse for pretty much everyone on the planet. you spend every night telling your audience what a soulless monster he is. if there was ever a person who deserved a long, painful covid death, it's him.
