Please tell me that this arises from the NYC FAP thread and isn't coincidence...

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually Yancey, this thread is ALL YOUR FAULT.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

um. what are they?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

ferrets' brains

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Aren't hushpuppies deep-fried cornbread? That's what I thought. But ferrets' brains sound just as good.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

As long as they're deep-fried ferrets' brains, it's okay.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Long John Silver's makes the best hush puppies ever but sadly NYC has none to be found. No memorable deep-fried pickles either.

Grade: F-

Andy, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Who knew NYC had so many repressed hush puppy lovers in its midst. I had a flash of inspiration today whilst on the subway with Rosemary -- Far From Heaven was good by the way! -- does anyone think that the Howard Johnson's restaurant in Times Square might offer such delicacies??

And, do any of you punters remember Chesapeake Bay Seafood House?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

And, do any of you punters remember Chesapeake Bay Seafood House?

I dimly remember it in the Washington area (but then aren't you from NoVa?).

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Yikes, I just saw the New York FAP thread and didn't realize LJS' hush-puppy excellence was already well-documented.

I bet if HoJo's has them they're $11 each.

Andy, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

There are Long John Silver's on Long Island. (Road trip!) None in New Jersey though, sob.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

they make great hushpuppies here in Kansas CIty at Jazz, a New Orleans' style restaurant.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, J. Lu I am from NoVa though I sometimes ironically pose as a Midwesterner in search of a Midwestern boyfriend...oh no!...thread interconnectiveness alert!

And Andy, nice to see you over on ILE! B-but, in Time Out New York Ethan Hawke listed HoJo TS as his favorite NY restaurant!

I am now picturing Mike Hanley (sic) as an extra in Robert Altman's Kansas City...

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

God, I love Hojo's TS. That and the Gaiety are the only things left from the good old days. I can't believe they haven't been bought up, it's a miracle!

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Malcolm "I have a big fro now" Gladwell to thread...

Mat Bo (Mat Bo), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Arthur! The GG Dance Marathon a laugh-a-minute, not! Can you please tell your friend/writer that the the show's most die-hard fan is about to jump ship, unless something changes, soon! A return to form is all I'm asking for, that, and if they could do away with LG's new Farah Fawcett-style hairstyle...Good lord, I may even (gasp!) start watching Buffy on Tues. nights...

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Come over to the dark side, Mary. You know you want to.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, no, Mary. Bummer! I'm on my way over there to watch it right now. Well, it's not one of the one's that he wrote, I know that much.

And, I don't know, Rosemary, isn't Buffy a bit aimless this season? It used to be my favorite show, but I don't really miss it. That's another thread, I guess. Another thread where I'll probably have my head bitten off by the irate ILX Buffy Massive.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

there is something big going to happen! don't stop now!

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Tonight's episode was weird, but I liked it. Last week's was soooo bad, but the Anya episode was grebt.

All new Buffy watchers get a free serving of hush puppies.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I have already forgotten last week's

but this week the scenes with the vampire in the cemetary were awesome!

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

What about reformed Buffy watchers? A side of cole slaw or something? Neil Hannon named his daughter -- Willow -- do we think he was inspired by the show?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I would be so psyched tomorrow if I woke up in the morning and saw this thread had grown 150 posts strong...Momus to thread!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I have not met Robert Altman, but I feel very close to George Brett

Mike Hanle y (mike), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 06:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Qui est GB?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 06:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I though the Dance Marathon episode was (almost) saved by the closing shot. If Jess becomes Mr. nice guy boyfriend I will be tres disappointed.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 06:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I had no idea that you could eat Hush Puppies. Here in the UK, Hush Puppies are really crap brown shoes beloved of Tory MP Kenneth Clarke. I bought a pair once having been told that they were comforatble. They came apart v. quickly and I took them back to the shop.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Improbable explanation from the Hush Puppy shoes website:

"The name Hush Puppy, itself, is another slice of Americana. A Wolverine salesman, Jim Muir, was traveling with the new line in Tennessee, and while dining with a friend he noticed that when his friend's hound dogs began to bark, he tossed them actual Hush Puppy - an authentic Southern dish of fried cornmeal balls. At the time, feet were called dogs and aching feet were called barking dogs. Since his friend's corn Hush Puppy had quieted the dogs, Muir thought the same idea worked for the new line of comfort casual pigskin shoes."

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i have two bassets already. no thanks.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh bnw, but isn't it a bit soon for this Rory/Jess thing to become a fait accompli? I mean, doesn't Rory feel at all guilty, and is she really able to immediately embark on relationship #2 with theJesster, as we see in the next episode, mucho kissing, oh no! how did they go from sexual tension to sappiness in pointzero seconds? Leaving me to state again, on tv at least, sexual tension rulez!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

So the Dance Marathon was a bit of a letdown, yeah. Not enough Emily/Lorelei bickering, not enough indie love from Lane and the guy in her band, not enough laughs, yeah. I liked the dancefloor showdown though, Dean really came into his own! Also-Lorelei really only had the Farrah 'do in the opening scene, didn't she?

The next episode, the road trip one, is supposed to be good...

OK, here's the dirt: the guy who plays Kirk is an ass; in 2 weeks there's the Thanksgiving Odyssey episode (L & R go to 4 dinners: starting at Lane and Mrs. Kim's house, then to somebody else {I think Sookie and the husband}, then on to the parents, then ending up at the diner); AND Rory and Jess have become a real life item! My friend was pretty tight-lipped about what happens to their characters, though. I like the idea of all the other characters getting in their way of their love, it seems likely.

From Hollywood, I'm Rona Barrett (Arthur), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Can you guess what the "KC" on his hat stands for? Then you will understand why Hanle y Deus mentioned him!

I watched my first whole episode of Buffy last night and was thouroughly baffled and charmed -- can I have a hush puppy?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Kitchen Cink!

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity: yes

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Your not alone in thinking Hushpuppies were comfortable dress shoes.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Where do you sign up for the job of Wolverine Salesperson?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a tough business.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a dangerous line of work, bub.

Logan *snikt* (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmm, hushpuppies. Yep, I can make those. Mmmmm. I feel bacon fat might come into play somehow, just a little.

Good with:

huge prawns
just about any barbecued seafood (you need the shit-hot barbecue sauce too)

Probably not so good with:

trad brit fish and chips

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul, you almost make me do a Diet Coke spit-take! I suppose that gets me back for my felonious pun. But don't the Wolverine salespeople have extraordinarily regenerative constitutions?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers Felicity, I get it! Oh no! I can't stop talking like a fake British person! Perhaps some Hush Puppies will return me to my god-given fake Southern ways...Really, you watched Buffy? I wish I could have joined. Dance marathon Gilmore not a good time. Oh no! What will I have to identitfy with if I give up the Girls, and thus the B? No, not a strange drug, short for the WB of course... Newsflash: Voice TV Writing Coming Soon (alas, not by any of our illustrious posters, but she does have a tenuous relationship to the board)...Stay tuned...I love how my reliance on the interconnectivity of threads means that I can follow up on a digressionary question posted on ILM right here...

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 14 November 2002 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Hush puppies are OK, but if you're going to make the effort to eat at a Long John Silver's... it's crumbs you want. A little cardboard boat of batter bits that they scoop from the bottom of the fryer... heavenly!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 14 November 2002 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Why did this never happen? I want hush puppies.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)
