A Tour de France of Ensemble Work (The Modern Family Poll)

Not exactly timely, I know. I just started watching this a year ago and finished the S11 finale yesterday. It had the usual ups and downs for such a long-running series, and the finale was just okay, but all in all, I thought it was pretty great. Not as good as The Larry Sanders Show--nothing is--but probably in a runners-up group of a half-dozen for my favourite sitcom ever.

I included all the principals from the three families, including Dylan (who disappeared for a while, and was probably in the show less than a few secondary characters, but did marry into the family). Well, not Poppy, George, or Rexford. Or Stella, or in-laws, or exes. But everyone else.

Including Dylan...and then I leave him out.

Phil in a walk. One of the best physical comedians on network TV in recent years.

He's amazing. I'm deciding between Phil and Claire.

In terms of the kids, Alex, Manny, and Luke are the funniest. Lily, in the end, did develop a kind of weird deadpan that I enjoyed.

Haley and Joe are variations on standard sitcom types: Joe is the precocious kid who says impossibly clever things (i.e., hopelessly scripted), Haley the self-absorbed bubblehead. I find them funny at times, but not nearly as original as the others. Luke and Dylan are also bubbleheads, but there's something surreal about their banter that transcends that. Like when Alex is collecting bottles to build houses in Africa, and Luke says how cool it would be to live in a house built out of bottles; also, see thread title.

Obviously, a beloved show...Gloria is kind of a guilty pleasure. SofĂa Vergara is a talented comedienne, and I think she got better as the show went along. But there was always the feeling that she was more or less Ricky Ricardo, way too broad by a few decades. But then they'd play with that and surprise you. And her eye-rolling at Jay's expense was often great. So I went back and forth with her.

one month passes...

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that this show's 2020 season is not nominated in the 2020 ILX TV poll, because I wasn't thinking how even though the final season started in 2019, it ended in 2020, but I listed it anyway, and if a few more people do, that'll probably make things difficult when tabulating votes, and will require a decision whether or not they even count, but maybe that'll be enough to get it onto the final list.

ILX's Best Television of 2020 Poll / VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD / Voting Ends After January 29, 2021
