where is here?

http://www.iana.org/numbers.html help at all?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

is this a question about port numbers?

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

The first bit is set to 0 to identify the network as a Class A type; this results in 128 (27) possible Class A networks, but those with prefix 0 and 127 are used for special functions and the upper half (with prefixes above 64) are reserved for future use.

One each for every ilxor!

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to be confused with these soundalikes http://www.iananet.org/

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

graham, some of those 'future ones' are in use now arent they?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

damm, you have even more time on your hands then me. I must be working too hard.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Arent the new IP addresses under the brolly of IPV6? The four octet standard ones that we all know and love are IPV4 - I would assume that the new ones have two extra octets. Maybe I should look into this - it is my job, I suppose. Or well, part of it. 127 as a first octet is loopback, btw. Can't remember what 0 is. Think it's similar to 255 in the fact that if you ping zero everything will respond.

I'll shut up now.

lol p xx, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

so, yeah, 80 and 81 nets in use right?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

the degree to which I am disappointed that I was wrong is ineffably higher than the level at which I do not care

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Should I know what the hell you're talking about? And should I care?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

If you care about the internet or any communication using TCP/IP you should care about the IANA.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 14 November 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

That doesn't explain a lot.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Certain IP addresses are not available for consumption, they are beign reserved for further use. Should you are case about that, probably not. Should you care that you don't know what we are rambling about, depends.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Its about as life shaking as finding out what Fremme Nappa Vendetta means.

IPv4 is starting to become more than a little annoying, yes.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

and TCP's got it all wrong for the two one cent, is all I'm saying

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Arent the new IP addresses under the brolly of IPV6? The four octet standard ones that we all know and love are IPV4 - I would assume that the new ones have two extra octets.

They're at least twice as long as the old ones - I can't actually remember the length of IPV6 addresses. 4 and 6 are just version numbers; it's just coincidence that IPV4 addresses are 4 octets long.

so, yeah, 80 and 81 nets in use right?

BT has 81 - they're my ISP, and often give me a DHCP address in 81/8.

INTERNET PROTOCOL V4 ADDRESS SPACE

(last updated 27 January 2005)

The allocation of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) address space to
various registries is listed here. Originally, all the IPv4 address
spaces was managed directly by the IANA. Later parts of the address
space were allocated to various other registries to manage for
particular purposes or regional areas of the world. RFC 1466 [RFC1466]
documents most of these allocations.
