I've never seen Hester Street, but I like Between the Lines, Chilly Scenes of Winter--or at least I did, when I last saw it ~35 years ago--and Crossing Delancey.

RIP! One of the few female filmmakers of her generation who was able to work regularly and has a decent sized body of work.

He's holding court for some would-be rock critics--he teaches a seminar or something--who are conspicuously all female and furiously taking notes:

I don't remember anything about the Gerry P interview but Leonard R was insightful on Tommy Lawton and wasteful corner techniques. Rigsby 0-1 Pacemaker (David Johnson) on that evening, mind.

Tanya Roberts, who co-starred on That ’70s Show and Charlie’s Angels, passed away Sunday. She was 65.

Roberts reportedly collapsed at home following a walk with her dogs on Christmas Eve, a rep for Roberts told TMZ. She was hospitalized and put on a ventilator, but never recovered. The official cause of death is currently unknown.

RIP Andrew Vachss. Years and years ago, I went to a James Ellroy signing for the UK launch of LA Confidential, at the specialist crime bookshop Murder One. It was, slightly bizarrely, a joint signing with Ruth Rendell who, outshouted and outraged by a VERY full-on Ellroy, quickly stopped signing and left. After queuing for a while I got to Ellroy, and he asked me my name for the dedication. When I said 'Andrew' (cos that's my name) he immediately roared back, "WHERE'S THE EYEPATCH?"

His dedication? 'To Andrew - blood rage in a poodle's cage'.

Okay that's an anecdote for the ages.

I didn't see a post about Caroline Peyton, the great singer whose '70s albums Mock Up and Intuition gained a new audience when Numero Group reissued them in 2009. She died in Nashville on August 11. A fabulous singer indeed. I wrote this about her a few months ago.

Also made a fortune from Pigbag. He’s an old friend of mine and was just discussing Denis on FB in the wake of Get Back a few weeks ago.
