Seen four of nine. Three are slick, reasonable entertainments. Live Die Repeat is a classic.

I should watch more of the movies of Doug Liman. Rewatched Go a few years back and was genuinely surprised at how well it held up (I had consigned it in my mind to the ash heap of that era's forgettable cultural artifacts a la 200 Cigarettes).

Edge Of Tomorrow is ridiculous and fun. I didn't know it was Doug Liman tbh.

If only the studio had settled on a single goddamn name for the film (and a less bland one than they used for the theatrical release), Edge of Tomorrow would've been deservedly huge.

In a lot of ways he doesn't get enough credit for successfully launching a major action franchise. It's not like Greengrass was given a mess to clean up, the first Bourne is solid stuff.

Part of me thinks that "Edge of Tomorrow" may be reaching the zone of 'so often cited as being underrated that it's now overrated', but it's definitely still the pick here IMO.

enjoy Doug Liman as director, think Emily Blunt is lots of fun, love sci-fi but tom cruise as lead killed all desire to see it when came out and even looking it up now as potential watch lost all interest again

as said above Bourne was solid but guess that was it, not deeply exciting, though def good enough to launch franchise

I saw the UK premiere of Go at the Glastonbury Festival and recall people going pretty mental at the end cheering and whooping in a late 90s rave-y fashion. I was pretty refreshed and thought it was amazing but it never really lived up to that first crazed viewing.

Swingers for the win though.

The Bourne Identity is the least obnoxious of that trilogy (yeah, I know there were more made later; I didn't see them) by virtue of it being the one that was not directed by Paul Greengrass. I really hated Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and I have no idea why I ever watched Jumper. I remember Go being a fun little Tarantino riff; it gets my vote.

Never saw Swingers or anything he's made in the last decade. I don't even recognize the titles of Fair Game (assuming its not the Cindy Crawford picture) or The Wall (assuming its not...well, you know).

First Bourne is the only one I care about because Clive Owen

I liked Mr. & Mrs. Smith at the time, but haven't seen it since the theater - Liman's ability to direct action coherently contrasted strongly with Batman Begins back then (and with 20 15 years of superhero movies since).

He'd do a good John Wick IMO.

his bourne is good, i just watched the first 3 bourne movies for the first time over christmas for the first time ever and it's clearly the best of the bunch.

mr and mrs smith: the action is not bad, jolie and pitt are very hot.

i'm sad i haven't seen go and i'm going to abstain for that reason. bourne is fantastic; i watched swingers for the first time last year and tbh it was a lot better than i was expecting.

Bourne, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Live Die Repeat/Edge of Tomorrow - I went into the theater expecting nothing and came out thinking they were good (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) or great (Bourne, EoT), but I can't say that "a Doug Liman film" is ever going to be the tagline that gets me to pay $15.

Go would probably fall into the same wonderful surprise category but I saw that when some friends and I rented a three pack at Blockbuster: Go, Pi and Baseketball

American Made was a fuckin Wikipedia article with zero intrigue or interest.

Go was dope.

Bourne was tight.

Edge of Tomorrow was a lot of fun even if the last 5 minutes confused me.

The first Bourne is great, miles better than any of the others. The fight scenes between Damon and the other super-agents (Clive Owen, the blond-haired guy) are brutal in a way Hollywood doesn't usually permit. Would definitely have voted for that. Edge of Tomorrow is good but it's mostly about the joy of watching Tom Cruise getting repeatedly mulched. Haven't seen Go since it was in theaters. Swingers...ugh. I liked Jumper but I think I'm the only person on Earth who did. Never saw any of the others.

legit surprised to see the love for Go here, havent seen it since it came out and my memory of it just blends in with all the other post Pulp Fiction backwash like The Big Hit or 2 Days in the Valley etc - I'll have to give it a rewatch, yall got me curious now

The abrupt shift from possible swingers to MLM pitch in Go was so freaky.

that's a great moment. he was good at milking the comedic value of the unexpected twist - see also Vince Vaughn flirting in the diner in Swingers.

i rewatched go recently and would dispute the idea that it holds up well

it isn't awful but it's so heavy on the late '90s cynicism-poisoned violence and was more humorless than i remembered

I won't dispute the 90's cynicism and post-Tarantino violence, but it is not humorless.

Literally the only thing I remember from it is a scene where someone on drugs is imagining that a cat is telepathically talking to them, conveyed via subtitles, which I’ll admit is a funny gag that has stuck with me

Yeah, like all this terrible stuff happens, but it's basically a happy ever after ending in the scheme of things.

I keep reaching for Go, when going through my pile of DVDs during lockdown, but remembering

a) the sexy/not sexy bug search to Massive Attack's Angel

b) the selling of dud pills to parking lot noobs with "these are the kind of pills you need to do alot of weed to really enjoy"

and my hand is stayed..
