I only recently tried Earl Grey tea and it struck me how much the citrus and color reminded me of cola.So I wondered why there isn't a popular Earl Grey Cola, and my guess is people would hate it. But is that true?I think it might taste nice. Do you think you would enjoy a fizzy Earl Grey?
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 January 2021 17:56 (four years ago)
I do not think I would enjoy an Earl Grey Tea as a cola. Thanks for asking!
― frogbs, Thursday, 21 January 2021 17:59 (four years ago)
are we talking oil of bergamot flavour cola (which would be lemon coke but a bit more perfumey) or actual tea-flavoured cola?
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 21 January 2021 17:59 (four years ago)
no
― ciderpress, Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:02 (four years ago)
i think it's hard to say. i remember the first time i saw hong kong style tea with coffee on a menu i was taken-aback but it's pretty good.
― Fenners' Pen (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:03 (four years ago)
I would but is this gonna be a thing where to get it i gotta order like 500
― Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:03 (four years ago)
I'm not crazy about bergamot, so no. (You can get either Earl Grey or Lady Grey as knuckle tattoos, btw.)

i think i would like this, yes
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:34 (four years ago)
I honestly only realized recently that black tea kind of gives me a stomach ache. Might be the tannins? Same for a few (though fewer) wines.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:41 (four years ago)
I remember in the film of Prozac Nation there's a scene where Wurzel screams at some guy for putting milk in her Earl Grey, and I was like... Earl Grey with milk is the standard tea I have drunk all my life, what is this strange country across the ocean?
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:43 (four years ago)
I should add that I had Earl Grey without any milk and any imaginary cola extrapolation should also exclude any cream unless you were planning to make an ice cream float.
Milk might help with the tannins?
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:43 (four years ago)
Also yes we should be thinking tea-flavored cola over bergamot accented cola, though honestly I don't think there'd be much difference given all the sugar...
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:46 (four years ago)
Not as a cola, but as a hot toddy sure
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 January 2021 18:51 (four years ago)
I think OP would be surprised what the flavoring ingredients of Coca Cola might be.

Citrusy, Caffeiney, Brown-y, it seemed fairly compatible which is why I was wondering why it's not a popular cola variety.
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 January 2021 21:43 (four years ago)
I would only enjoy Earl Grey Tea as a cola.

monstrous behaviour!
although now that i think of it i sometimes get earl grey bubble tea and that has mlik in it
― Fenners' Pen (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 21 January 2021 21:45 (four years ago)
re: bubble tea / milk etc...what do y'all picture as the platonic ideal of earl grey tea?closer to medicine or creamsicle?
― Philip Nunez, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:15 (four years ago)
Medicine creamsicle. Though tbh no idea what a creamsicle is.
Earl grey is delightful in all its forms - with or without various milks, in cakes, as ice cream. No reason why cola should not be added to the list. Will you be concocting this, PN?
― tangenttangent, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:26 (four years ago)
earl grey is the bottom of the barrel black tea though
i used to get it at restaurants or coffee shops because for a while that was the only choice (usually with a bit of milk)
there are far better black teas out there
the fancy milk tea shops use assam, for example
― Punster McPunisher, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:30 (four years ago)
or no doubt some amazing taiwanese tea, which is probably a better option
― Punster McPunisher, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:31 (four years ago)
I'm not a big fan of creamsicles but if you're a fan of creamsicles and don't know it, you must try a creamsicle -- it's an orange popsicle with a creamy center.I thought about making an earl grey kombucha, which is easy enough to do, but making cola seems like you'd need to be an 1800s quack medicine salesman to do right.
― Philip Nunez, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:35 (four years ago)
Earl Grey kombucha is a mistake, do not do it
The bergamot does not respond well to aging, the results are undrinkable
In general, Earl Grey is one of my favourite everyday black teas, but I don't think I'd enjoy it in any other context (not as an ice cream, not as a kombucha, not as a cola)
Some kind of oolong-y cola would be nice
― flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:41 (four years ago)
what about just mixing it in with some water with something like sodastream, where you just pump carbonation into it
there's other ones that allow you to use different syrups, as well
― Punster McPunisher, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:44 (four years ago)
Oof -- tell me more of this Earl Grey bergamot catastrophe!
― Philip Nunez, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:46 (four years ago)

Williamson Earl Grey is our long term favourite, recommended. I've seen it in places other than Waitrose, but I can't remember.
I did see bottles of fizzy tea in Fortnum&Masons October just gone, so maybe Earl Grey cola is a potential winner. (the bottles were somewhat pricey as you can imagine, £7 to £14 or thereabouts)
― Mark G, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:51 (four years ago)
computer--earl grey tea cola, hot
― adam, Saturday, 23 January 2021 20:56 (four years ago)
I would definitely try an Earl Grey cola.
― JRN, Saturday, 23 January 2021 20:59 (four years ago)
@ Philip, the results tasted horrendous, coppery, like the way a sweaty hand gripping a penny smells? that was the taste

Over the summer I made several batches of black tea syrup to drink as a soda. It was great!
― Canon in Deez (silby), Saturday, 23 January 2021 22:30 (four years ago)
Tastes a lot like Coke

back in the day my granddad used make dandelion tea and dandelion & burdock is a tasty sparkling beverage so I'd try it as a regular Earl Grey drinker. But saying that I don't recall seeing the finest dandelions & burdocks being sourced (guaranteed no dogs have pissed on them) when I worked at the Ben Shaws factory. They do have a natural spring that flows under the factory but the lying fuckers didn't put moon dust in their Space Pop either!

I would drink the shit out of some lapsang souchong cola
