What do you do with your old clothes? Chuck them away? Recycle them? Give them to Oxfam? Store them in cupboards for eternity?

...tell me what becomes of yr discarded garments!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 14 November 2002 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

wear them

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 14 November 2002 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Throw them away. I keep my clothes about four or five years. Until I am either fed up with'em or... they fall apart.

Well usually I take them to the clothes recycling bin thingie but in my move I discovered some truly hideous fashion disasters I've never worn more than like once that are made out of really nice fabrics, so I'm gonna make cushions with them, eventually.

I give them away to my friends who've been kicked out of home and are living in hostels wearing the same grimey Foo Fighters t-shirt all week. It's always odd seeing them come out in clothes I used to wear a couple of years ago.

I don't have any female friends as tall as I am, so I generally end up giving old clothes to the good will. Skirts & tops I offer to my friends and sisters first.

If they're nice material I turn them into cushions, toys, blankets etc. The rest are offered to friends, then what is left goes to the charity shops (usually Scope).

ron (ron), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Ditto jel's answer. My clothes are old, but never are they dirty.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Some I give to a homeless shelter.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Give to Goodwill, unless they're in unwearable condition.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i wear them til they fall apart or they go in the goodwill bag.
some have become cushions, isnt it great what fancy cushions can be made from old clothes!

donna (donna), Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I've sold some of my more desireable stuff to vintage shops; otherwise I just toss 'em out!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

save them, coz u never know if u will want them again, fashions always come back round and vintage/old clothes can go really well with new items!!!!

five months pass...
Keep them at my parents' house until they come back into fashion. I am wearing a shirt from college today. I wish I had saved more.

Sometimes I trade old stuff with my mom. I got a nice raincoat and pink cardigan sweater from her recently and she wears some of my old jeans and slacks to do her gardening. We also pass shoes back and forth.

six years pass...

i unburied this jacket from deep within my closet today that i bought when i was a freshman - 24 years ago - because my wife was telling me recently how much she missed it. it still fits, sorta, a little short in the sleeves but otherwise good to go. it was a new jacket when i bought it but with a definite 50s/60s styling (that was big in the vintage style of the day). i found a lottery ticket from 1995 in one of the pockets!
