i actually grew up... about an hour's drive from the town letterkenny is based on, where plenty of people sounded exactly like these guys (especially mcmurray, my god, i knew some mcmurrays). there's even an episode that NAMES THE TOWN I GREW UP IN which kinda blew my mind

i still kinda sound like this irl sometimes. i haven't lived there for a long time so it's faded but i'll tell you when i first watched this show it came back

depends on what kind of development you’re looking for. there are more characters that get things to do, and there’s some minor evolution of a few characters, but the format remains “this is some stuff that happened to these people” where the stuff changes but the people remain the same

I looked up the Wikipedia entry while still watching season one expecting to have to dodge some spoilers and laughed when the description of the nine-season series as a whole could've applied to any episode I'd already seen.

yeah i just started season 7 and it seems to be a step down

me and the missus had just started using "pitter patter" as shorthand around the house when we landed on that season and bailed

7 def feels like a step down, wonder if there was some kind of issue w/ writing during covid and they still had to meet a deadline or something. didn't really have any storylines, it felt like. i'm sure they'll get a million more seasons since it's like the only hit crave has i think? hopefully they right course.

thought 8 and 9 were as good as any other season

going through s9 now but so far prefer 8+9 to 6+7

it kinda dipped a little since S6 but its an easy watch and there's generally at least one scene per episode that i laugh at. Got plenty of laughs out of s8-9. littlekenny i watched about 30 seconds of and bounced.

as someone who grew up in rural MN it's a hell of a lot more familiar feeling than PHC

wait maybe im not thinknig of 7. whatever the latest season is. that's the one that feels weird and unfinished.

think i said some of this in the hulu thread, but to me a comprehensive list of reference points must include:

-king of the hill (rural sensibilities in the modern world! and a lot of sitting around drinking and shooting the shit)
-jody hill (slow motion violence with cool songs, also often rural)
-kevin smith (most of the characters are written in the author's voice, fondness for hockey)

there's generally at least one scene per episode that i laugh at

can't really explain it but just watched the one where shoresy, talking shit the entire time, routs the shamrockettes. which was fine, but then he ends all the chirping with 'short shifts!' and i almost choked

the existence of shoresy is such a ridiculous comedy bit, but I end up laughing at the character nearly every time

Some of the episodes where they only sit and crack puns gets a bit much, but every single one of the slow motion fight scenes are hilarious. I kinda like the back and forth with the hockey dudes and skids sometimes more than the regular gang in-front of the vegetable stand.

It is a show where I would like to see more from some of the obscure characters. I liked that they finally had Joint Boy and Tyson get more lines in them working with Stewart to get him ready to fight.

I'd obviously like to see more of Scottie, who keeps bad company with the Ginger and Boots.

I would love to see Cyrus' character from Trailer Park Boys cross over ala Richard Belzer's Munch into Letterkenny, as I think he was funny and I could see that dude building up to one of those beat downs with Cyrus in charge of some degens up to no good.

Gave up on Letterkenny several seasons before the end, but I've watched the first three episodes of Shoresy and it might be even funnier.

the last few seasons of letterkenny were a bit of a struggle

i don't think shoresy is actually funnier, but it has semblances of plots and forward movement, which helps a good bit. letterkenny really *was* a show about nothing

(tbf the shoresy s05 'plot' is pretty absurd, even if the opponents' coach is fantastic)

and while shoresy's conception of hockey is anachronistic and bloodthirsty, i think keeso promotes it as a form of canadian nationalism. the future of hockey is players like mcdavid and mackinnon, who can overwhelm with speed and skill without constantly worrying that someone will end their careers with an elbow to the head--not the jims. but i guess nations need their myths of badassery

agree with mookie that the plot aspect of Shoresy is really rudimentary, but the predictable structure really cues you up for the payoff. nearly every episode has a premise that drops at the beginning, one bit of foreshadowing that's going to pay off toward the end, and a moment where you pump your fist in the air when both of those come together. and the season as a whole has the same structure. it's like going on a well-planned multi-day road trip

The music supervisor on SHORESY should win some kind of lifetime achievement Canadian Emmy. The songs in every episode are hilarious/awesome/brilliant.

Overall a treat as always but all in all S5 felt like it only had about 4-5 episodes' worth of good material in the tank. And that last monologue of Nat with the Presbyterians was probably the worst thing the show's ever done imo

Finished the season last night. It was really good. The scene with Shoresy consoling/advising the homesick player was one of the most incredible "positive masculinity" things I think I've ever seen in semi-mainstream media. And the scene a couple of episodes later with him and the two high school hockey players razzing each other made me gasp, I was laughing so hard. Don't know that I need a season 6 (coming in 2027!) but we'll see, I guess.
