David Blunkett goes 'phew!' at dodging moral dilemma.

The child is on the moors etc.

The Barbie of serial killing goes down, will Ken follow?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 15 November 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Not if Daily Sport's "Send Ian Brady A Pie" campaign kicks in again (USA: IB on long hunger strike).

They have another Ian (and a Maxine) waiting in the wings anyway.

Seriously though, are we harder on female murderers/accomplices than male ones, and if so, isn't that a bit unfair? Or at the very least a product of dubious social conditioning?

suzy (suzy), Friday, 15 November 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Call me wrong... I thought Hindley was never found guilty of murder, only accesorising to murder and torture?

And, in answer to Suzy's question, of course Hindley would have been out by now if she was a man. She has more vitriol aimed at her by Portsmouth stylee ugly lynch mobs, and she did a tenth of what he did.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 15 November 2002 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Hindley certainly confessed to murder (sometime in the 80s), and AFAIK was convicted for that crime.

I think theoretically it was unjust that she wasn't released, but personally I didn't care one way or another. Nor do I care now she's dead. I think the tabloids are going to have several field days of unearned sanctimony and that's going to be pretty distasteful, but my view is - to hell with her, and let her be forgotten as soon as possible.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 16 November 2002 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

she was like the dusty springfield really of serial killing - occasionally popping up to support 80s pop bands but her best work was in the 60s and it was all downhill and dunhill after that.

Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 16 November 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if she should have been released either but I do believe that it should be the judiciary that decides on sentencing and parole not politicians.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 16 November 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Ed I completely agree but with Hindley gone the inevitable reform of those powers will pass without much of a fuss - as one of the immutable fixed points on the tabloid moral compass she was the main thing stopping Blunkett from quietly going along with Law Lord recommendations.

(singing) 'ev'ry time i see your picture myra
i have to phone my latest girlfriend and fire her,
and find a prostitue who looks like you and hire her
...i mean it brady i'm gonna ave yer lady
just cause i can ave her and you can't
so pogo on that y' twat...'

thanks.

there's a lot of stuff on Skum News about how she is being cremated under heavy security. It does make me wonder whether the crematorium is under siege from neanderthals shouting "Kill her! Kill her!", kind of forgetting that she is already dead.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

as a Neanderthal, I resent being associated with the kind of people who hang around outside courthouses shouting abuse at people on trial.
