Extremely important question:
If an octopus had seven legs, how would you spell what it would be called?
Septepus?
Septapus?
Septopus?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 15 November 2002 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

septapus, just on the basis that a 50p is a septagon.

I much prefer the hexapus over the septapus. One saves the expense of the odd shoe.

Amputee.

"Would you like to see my septapussy?"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 15 November 2002 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

septic pussy

Yeah, that's pretty much the only place you can go once that door's been opened but I didn't want to be the one to go there (for once).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 15 November 2002 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Heptapus" (The root isn't Latin.)

kieran, Friday, 15 November 2002 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

So, does everyone agree it's "septapus"? (I do have a reason for asking this, so I am actually looking for an answer).

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 15 November 2002 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

my vote is for septapus

Here's a neat site, I don't think it is what you are looking for though.

Oh, damn - I thought that this was a conspiracy theory thread.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 15 November 2002 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

keiran's right, nick, it's heptapus not septapus: greek root not latin (pl. = heptapodes not heptapi)

a seven-sided figure is a heptagon not a septagon

kerry, you want the dodecapodosaur thread

OK.
I was supposed to draw an octopus for my band's cd cover but I accidently only drew 7 legs. So we've taken to calling it the Septapus EP, but I wasn't sure how to spell it. I guess heptapus is technically correct, but since we don't really need to be technically correct, I think it will stay Septapus.

Heptapodes? Nah. The idea that octopodes is the plural of octopus is always put forward by the kind of people who write smartass letters to the Guardian. These people are wrong. It's not octopi either. The plural of octopus, in English, is octopuses. It's that simple. So the plural form of heptapus would be heptapuses.

Octopi have eight peni!

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 17 November 2002 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't say the plural of octopus was octopodes, mr kicks: as you note, that wd be very extremely silly

however by all the logic of english as i haf so far unverstand it, the plural of heptapus wd therefore be heptapodes

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 17 November 2002 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think, Mr S, that it could go either way. I suspect it would go mine. We have to wait until such a beast turns up, will we not? I'll see you then.

three weeks pass...
a squid has ten legs so should technically be a decapus.

and a cloned squid would be a double decapus.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

joke of the month!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

six tentacles would make it a Sexapus right?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And an exploding squid would be a bangpus?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
and one crossed with an ice cream would be a Magnum Opus.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And one with rampant acne would be a puspus.
