Sorry, that’s the answer for proper whiskey. For moonshine, I’d say it’s mostly a matter of distillation. Vodka is distilled multiple times to make it as pure as possible. Moonshine is only distilled once.

Stolichnaya gets good ratings and is priced well but is too pungent for me. Grey Goose is the smoothest and is my favorite but is expensive. Ketel One and Tito's are good in-betweens. As far as spirits go, I don't really like the taste of vodka and use it mostly disguised in drinks with fruit juices and liqueurs or in bloody marys
