Explain Christopher Guest films

Why do some people like these movies? What am I missing? What makes Waiting for Guffman a great (instead of a FUCKING HORRIBLE UNWATCHABLE TURN-IT-OFF-AFTER-A-HALF-HOUR-THE-EXPERIENCE-HAS-RUINED-THE-REST-OF-MY-FUCKING-DAY) movie?

Dan I., Saturday, 16 November 2002 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i feel the same way about paul thomas anderson and wes anderson.

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 16 November 2002 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel the same about most movies except those by Christopher Guest.

Okay, you all might like to know that ASCII art does not seem to work on ILX.

Well, it would have if it'd been organized right, the type font is equal-proportion. Sorry.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 16 November 2002 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha. We should make an ASCII art thread.

Please talk about Christopher Guest again: I enjoy the movies, but don't think I'm quite up to the long explanation it would take right now.

ok anyway... c.guest is best known for spinal tap. so he took that films format and ran with it. now he can take any subject (local theatre, dog shows) and make a 'spinal tap' style film and improvise crappy scenes.. throw in parker posey and BAM everyone creams their pants over it. there ya go. its stupid.

wtf did you guys do to this thread it is fux0red. anyway they are grate movies put that in yr pipe and smoke it

ron (ron), Saturday, 16 November 2002 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron, I know a lot of people say they're great movies, but I want to know why. 'Cause Chaki's explanation above is like how I see it; just a bunch of really stupid-looking semi-improv. Spinal Tap was, eh, okay; but the other ones, it's like, FUCK man (ha, I'm tired too). I need the humor explicitly spelled out for me. Why isn't it just really bad acting? Is this, like, a drama club sort of thing? Do I have to be down with the theater scene to come privy to this shit? What's up?

Dan I., Saturday, 16 November 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

The Waiting for Guffman script is here, thanks to the Internet Archive:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010813205302/www.waitingforguffman.com/script.htm

I think the movie is pretty much hilarious from start to finish. I'm not sure where to start - pick a scene.

Guest's kind of humor isn't for everyone, and that's fine. If it doesn't make you laugh, don't worry. I have a friend who is abhorrent to cheesy b-movies, and he doesn't find enjoyment in seeing bad, low-budget Troma-type movies. It is somewhat pointless to explain the humor to him, because laughter should just be an immediate reaction. But maybe I can try to explain what exactly about a scene I think is funny.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 16 November 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The thing is that it's true, it's kind of pointless to tell people WHY something is funny cos then it's not funny anymore. I really like Best in Show, that movie almost made me THROW UP I was laughing so hard, and I totally hate Parker Posey so it wasn't anything to do with that wench. I think I liked it more because my mom breeds dogs. I've never seen Waiting for Guffman tho.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 16 November 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

His films seem pretty similar to one another. I think Guffman works best because it satirizes something a lot of people take seriously, as opposed to heavy metal, dog shows and the like, which are already considered (semi-)absurd pursuits. Also, Corky St. Clair is a classic character.

I love Fred Willard. He's a great guy. For his birthday I'm getting him a den and a computer.
