UK Daytime Terrestrial TV 12th October 2021

Staying with my elderly parents for a few days the TV is on constantly. I usually miss these programmes even when I'm at home. I've read that cheap culture gives a better guide to a nation's psyche than high culture. What does this say about us?

I skipped news programmes and the made for TV film 'A Bride's Revenge'. Full listing here: ttps://www.radiotimes.com/tv/tv-listings/?sd=12-10-2021%2008:00

Difficult to see past the triptych of late afternoon quiz shows, Tipping Point, Pointless and The Chase. However something compellingly grim and watchable about Heir Hunters.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 10:43 (three years ago) link

How has Gordon Ramsey not taught America to clean their dirty ass restaurants yet?

Gordon Ramsey shouting at bewildered Americans vanity project restaurants is all time classic TV imo. Seems like something Alan Partidge would have pitched to an exec.

Nightmare Tenants Slum Landlords

Who do we root for in this fight, the Nightmare or the Slum?

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 11:13 (three years ago) link

Overdosed on Ramsey during the first lockdown, can't watch them at all now. Doesn't help that they they keep showing the same ones over and over again, mind you.

In my teenage years, I noticed that a show called 'Loose Women' aired on ITV in the middle of the night. In my constantly horny state, I believed this to be some sort of porn/adult show. Imagine my disappointment after staying up until 2am to watch it.

there is no need to watch any of these when talking pictures TV is there on freeview channel 81.

It's currently showing "Left Hand of God", which has Hmuphrey Bogart as a priest and Lee J. Cobb as a Chinese general(!)

I'm suspect of course but Camaraderie at Arms Lenght OTM.

That being said "Bargain-Loving Brits in the Sun" sounds like a line from a Fall song.

I mostly watch documentaries about nazis or Law and Order - lol same thing joke here

Whoever's responsible for all the narc shows on BBC1 in the morning is getting the fucking guillotine come the glorious day

The quiz shows are pretty much the only worthwhile fare here and I'll go with The Chase. Pointless has lost it's lustre, smug and lazily pleased with itself. In Eggheads the eggheads win every time and The Tipping Point is and always has been abysmal

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 12 October 2021 14:06 (three years ago) link

I can vibe with Four in a Bed sometimes but like Come Dine with Me the in built capacity for cunts to cheat is too enraging to bear when it happens

I think I just like watching fried breakfasts

I used to love Pointless but yes its got a bit smug and up itself lately. Just seems so boring compared to The Chase now too.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 12 October 2021 14:52 (three years ago) link

I can often hear The Chase on in the next room but never watch any of this. The last time I was watching daytime tv in memory was in a caravan in Newquay during torrential rainfall and it was Fred Dibnah and Don't Get Done, Get Dom. There was a startling case on the latter about a woman's dog that got electrocuted pissing against a lamppost because some idiot electrician had caused the whole metal body of it to become live somehow.

calzino, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 14:55 (three years ago) link

I got a bit obsessed with Money For Nothing for a while. For those who don't know, it's an "upcycling" programme, and some of the things they have done to poor unsuspecting furniture, it's just gobsmacking.

Pointless still wins it for me - it's always been a bit smug and I honestly haven't noticed a difference lately.

Also I will forever rep for that one Halloween when I turned on daytime TV only to see Doctors doing a straight-up honest-to-god version of Whistle and I'll Come To You.

emil.y, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 15:02 (three years ago) link

oh I've just noticed Frasier is on the list, which is hardly fair.

Profiles in Liquid Courage (WmC), Tuesday, 12 October 2021 15:19 (three years ago) link

Why don't they rename it "Geography is not my strong point" and have done with it?

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 15:31 (three years ago) link

the last time I saw Doctors they were doing a storyline about two of the main cast discovering swinging, which was interesting to see played out at lunchtime

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 15:51 (three years ago) link

(xxp) Not sure why Judge Judy isn't on the list tbh?

Richard Osman's smug ubiquity and bland Twitter centrism have finally put me off Pointless somewhat, but it's still just about my favourite TV quiz format ever.

chap, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 16:19 (three years ago) link

I think I've seen it once does anyone ever get a pointless answer?

conrad, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 16:22 (three years ago) link

Yes, fairly often - like once every two or three shows on average I'd say.

chap, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 16:25 (three years ago) link

The Chase OTOH is vastly overrated.

chap, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 16:29 (three years ago) link

that's a new series of Money For Nothing, started Monday. Sarah still sharing duties with 2 other presenters and a lot of the good craftsmen are no longer on the rosta but... I've seen every episode.

Caught 5 minutes of Claimed and Shamed and that's fascinating in its way, people making bogus insurance claims so ineptly. today one bloke had a car scrape but him and a ghost passenger both claimed whiplash injuries. their car was a mess, the car that hit them wasn't. then the investigators got their hands on cctv footage of the guy backing his car into concrete bollard at high speed...

koogs, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 17:03 (three years ago) link

a rosta is a cross between a roster and a rota, fact

Didn’t some smug fake judge type show take over the Jeremy Kyle hatred of poor people spot?

judge rinder?

Voted Bargain Hunt because the contestants do find humour in losing hundreds of BBC pounds on hideous bric a brac.

Can't stand Alexander Armstrong - the singing career, the useless travelogs on C5, his adverts for Pimm's, his documentaries sucking up to the royals, his support for hunting. Fuck him.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 26 October 2021 08:47 (three years ago) link

Threads like this and this twitter discussion really bring home (though you forget bcz you aren't around to watch it) how corrosive a lot of the items have been.

He's such a figure of fun - from his 90s fury at This Morning phone-in callers mentioning his shoplifting to being such a dithering old fool he gets compared to Alan Partridge - it's easy to miss the fact Madeley plays a not insignificant role in setting a right wing news agenda. https://t.co/xqhpf8QzMv

Mark G, Tuesday, 26 October 2021 09:15 (three years ago) link

Last time I saw Doctors, it started with a woman in a campervan listening to This Is The Day by The The, and then the whole thing spun into some bizarro Alice in Wonderland trip starring Helen Lederer and Harriet Thorpe as the March Hare and the Dormouse or something. It was fucking bonkers.

I watched quite a lot of Pointless with my sister, while we were shielding her at our place for 10 months. She wasn't the easiest of house guests, but I discovered that it brought us together, as we competed to guess the numbers. So I'm grateful to Pointless for that. Haven't watched it since!

yesterday's Money For Nothing. first two dumpers said the usual "we'll give this unexpected windfall to charity / our grandchildren". the third one, a bloke, just said "I'm saving up for a ps5".

also, Josh and Ollie are back.
