lost picture book memory - monkey and mouse in a fairground

i had a beautiful book when i was very young
a mouse and a monkey are looking at a picture on a wall and suddenly they jump into it a la mary poppins and bert the chimney sweep
the picture was either a ship or a seaside carnival
either way they end up at the carnival. it is the 19th century.

is this book real?
watching 'the city of lost children' recalled this book strongly.

if it is a real book, should i try and find it again or is the elusive memory better the way it is?

"the unbearable lightness of being"

the ship sounds more the beginning of the "voyage of the dawn treader" (also why wd they jump into a ship pic and get to a carnival?)

this doesn't ring a bell sadly minna: do you mean the book was written in the 19th century or set in the 19th century - what kind of pic is it?

w. a few one-off folktale/fairytale exceptions, animals as protagonists in kidlit = starts w.beatrix potter and kenneth graham (eg circa 1890s-1900)... joel chandler's uncle remus wz 1885?

did the text "fit around" the pix (cf wanda gag and millions of cats)? that is a 20th century thing: 1930s onwards

it wasn't an old book, just set in the 19th century (or maybe even early 20th). i had it in the early-mid 80s so it's older than that.
the pictures were quite realistic line drawings filled in maybe with watercolour? the colours were dark, but intense - it seemed to be set in perpetual twilight like 'where the wild things are'.

use your memories to make a new picture book

Yes, then you will discover what you were thinking of when you are sued for plagiarism! Hurrah!
