Evil Richard in Coronation Street - classic or dud?

He rules! Did any of you see it tonight? That bit where he's talking to Gail about his mother going senile? Wow! Powerful! It's the first Coronation Street plotline that's really sucked me in in ages.

Some folk think he's a bit much. They prefer their Corry characters to be quirky and eccentric, rather than, well, a psycho! But I think it's about time Corry introduced a cold-blooded killer. What do you think?

i haven't seen coro st. for ages but evil richard sounds great, tho can he possibly be better than the time sarah-louise went to meet that guy she met on the internet and it turned out he was a creepy old man? coro st. is months behind in nz anyway so i think the evil richard thing is jus starting, by the looks of the ads (something about his ex-wife?). obv i will have to start watching it again.

calum, Monday, 18 November 2002 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought he was slick when the Doctor said "Audrey's a very lucky woman" and he went all psycho and stared at the camera and said "indeed she is". muhahahahhaha. I don't watch it obviously, it was just on in the background ahem ahem.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 18 November 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

The more you deny it, the less I believe you, Ronan,

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 18 November 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It was my mum watching it, I mean.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 18 November 2002 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Excuses, excuses...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 18 November 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i keep imagining him saying that line from I'm Alan Partridge, "I'm terribly sorry, but we've run out of life jackets!"

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Can someone please inform me (using as much detail as you like) what happened last night?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

AUDREY KNOWWWWWWSSSSSSS THAT RICHARD EVIL AND TOLD GAIL GAIL WANTS TO BELIEVE SHE'S SENILE BUT DEEP DOWN PERHAPS SHE KNOWS AUDREY'S TRUTHFUL GAIL WAS IN TEARS AFTER THEIR CONVERSATION RICHARD SAID TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT EARLIER GAIL + RICHARD WENT AUDREY'S HOUSE AND SHE SCREAMED "GET AWAY YOU BIG FUCKING KILLER!" + SHE'S FIGURED THIS EX-WIFE/MURDER DEAL AND SHE TOLD GAIL IN THE HEAVILY EMOTIONAL CONVERSATION.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel uncomfortable talking about this show once so loathed but it compels at this mo

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bits of that I saw already on Sunday - like Audrey knowing about Richard, and her splendid detective work. Best episode for ages. But I was pissed off that I might have missed Gail's finding out. I've been looking forward to that for ages. I laugh at that woman so much, and I'll laugh the most when she finds out her husband is a serial killer.

God, that "HEAVILY EMOTIONAL CONVERSATION" must've been great. Anyone got a transcript?

Also, why doesn't Corrie have an omnibus edition?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I thinks it going to be a gradual realisation rather than finding out. Something dull anyway.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:37 (twenty-three years ago)

This show went down the dumper the minute Derek died. Meh.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

"GET AWAY YOU BIG FUCKING KILLER" = greatest coronation st. line of all time. on last nights coro st. here he killed some woman w/ a (shovel? sledgehammer?) and buried her at the building site which was being concreted the next day, so obv he is classic. this woulda happened months ago in the uk though, what happens next?

calum, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

You're fucking wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy behind.

one month passes...
Looking forward to tonight's double bill of Richard psycho frenzy. Somebody's for the chop.

Pleased to see that ALL of the TV listings mags had mad Richard on the cover when I was in the supermarket on Saturday. With headlines like "Time to die" and "Richard kills again....but it's not Emily".

So who's it going to be? Toyah?

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 13 January 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Maxine apparently.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 13 January 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus, that's a bit extreme. I know she's annoying but....

I'm glad it's not Toyah.

So what did people think about last night's episode(s)?

I think Richard was great value. Truly convinced that his actions were correct. Favourite bits (out of many): when he started getting narked about the fact that Dougie had done a shoddy job on the building (like that was worse than bludgeoning someone to death), and when he pulled the phone out of the socket in a rage and then went "Don't be scared". Classic, classic, classic.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked it when he said "I'll put the kettle on"

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Truly convinced that his actions were correct

I must first put my hand up and say i have watched very little of this whole plot. the bits i saw last night tried very hard to do the self-justification Cracker bit, but they just sounded hollow and unconvincing to me. i think that was in the writing, not the acting. there were some good moments.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i didnt think anyone watched Corrie anymore? i havent since Raquel left, do you think the show will go on for another 20 years?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

It is one of ITVs top rating shows innit! Don't you people ever read Heat magazine's ratings section?

Evil Richard is ace and we have not seen the last of him (according to GMTV. Maybe if my sources were not GMTV and Heat I would be a better person.)

Emma, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I must admit last night was the first time I've sat through an episode of Corrie Orrie for years. I was alarmed to see that Gail still hasn't had the chin implant

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I watched Corrie for the first time EVER last night, so if I'm anything to go by the story must be doing wonders for their ratings. Even if I did switch off ten minutes before the end in order to go and watch the football. So what happened then?

I can't believe I am interested in this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

According to the writer who was interviewed last night on Radio 5, ther is more to the story, and there may well be a hostage situation.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the acting was mostly good, but the scripts have generally sucked. The whole story was dragged on for too long and became boring and frustrating. And there's no argument for that being in the name of realism, as 90% of the show bears no resemblance to reality.

The way in which everything just snowballed on Gail in an epiphany was ridiculous! They could have at least had her suspicions build for a week or three. The bit with Steve and the bracelet was utterly stupid -- why that night of all nights? Why not a week ago? Six weeks ago? Hell, six months ago?

The Alan Bradley thing was better. Mark Eden is a rather better actor, anyway. He actually looked like Regular Nice Bloke at the start and yet was completely convincing as Utter Bastard at the end. Richard looked like a slimey creep from Day One.

Still, CS has been so utterly pants otherwise, for a long time, this story has still seemed positively excellent...

ts: evil richard vs evil Katy

Anyone else excited for tonight's episode? I have to go out and watch a play, but i will be taping it.

thoughts?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Coronation Street on the CBC is almost a year behind, so I will have to wait awhile to see this.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm watching it now. It's a bit crap if they're trying to rival EastEnders - killing iconic character v killing a whinging nonentity who hasn't even had a hint of character definition in the couple of years he's been in the show.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Angela has just told Tommy to "drop dead". Cue much wringing of hands and guilt when he does just that in ten minutes time. Soap writers are so unimaginative...

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

On a separate note, where do they find all these men that find Sally Webster attractive?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It is baffling.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Least convincing murder ever by the way (matched only by Ray Langton's least unconvincing heart attack ever). I wish I could justify why Corrie is one of the only programmes I watch religiously, when it is so not very good...

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

least unconvincing heart attack

"most unconvincing" vs "least convincing". Take your pick.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Amy is mad for hummus! yeah!

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was a bit weird. Along with someone who brought a child up in the 70s remembering Zippy and George but forgetting about Bungle.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also how does Tracy know anything of what Amy likes since she has spend about three seconds with her since she was born?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I read in the paper that Status Quo are going to be in Corrie, at Les and Cilla's wedding. yeuch. has Janice's recent disappearance been accounted for?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

She is still present and correct but her hair and face are now the same shade of orange so they cancel each other out = she is all but invisible to the naked eye.
