This is an ILX PRO BONO thread

There is a lot of expertise about a lot of things on ilx.

You, ilx user, have valuable knowledge to share. Maybe you'd be willing to share it for frees with other ilxors?

If so, please post areas you have specialized knowledge/professional experience/personal expertise in, and would be willing to consult with other ilxors about.

I will go first.

I can offer pro bono consults in the general area of gerontology/aging & older adults/older adult caregiving, particularly in the USofA (stuff like Social Security, Medicare, care facilities like assisted livings and nursing homes, navigating our ridiculous healthcare system, etc.)

I also know a fair amount about horses.

I like the idea of this thread, but am just going to get it out of the way and make the requisite Bono joke first. There, done.

happy to answer most/all solar questions, especially about off-grid systems

Josh beat me to it, but my joek was going to be "it's about time we had a pro bono thread around here, considering how many anti Bono threads we've had".

Great thread idea
But
can’t we just post questions in relevant threads
Or am I missing something

sleeve, do you know stuff about HVAC systems?

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 02:02 (three years ago)

no not really, sorry! aside from their electrical usage I guess

American ilxors can ask me tax questions i guess - renewed my license for my 20th(!) tax season as a licensed tax person

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 02:05 (three years ago)

for some reason I thought you were a mechanical engineer and dealt with furnaces ... i have no idea why i thought that. Maybe I had a dream a while back where you were fixing a water heater?

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 02:06 (three years ago)

hahaha weirdly we had to replace our hot water heater recently, but I did not do it

my background is mostly electronics, residential wiring, and solar

chaos goblin line cook (sleeve), Friday, 7 January 2022 02:11 (three years ago)

ohhhhhhhhhh maybe I saw some post on fb about that lol

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 02:13 (three years ago)

though my question is about louvers

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 02:15 (three years ago)

I’m a 16mm filmmaker (MFA) so if you have any questions related to analog film or how it works, how certain films were made, or how to load a camera I can offer any “expertise”.

I can answer questions about electromagnetics, optics, and lasers. sleeve, do I need to replace the knob and tube in my crawlspace and attic?

Ssäm Sauce | Martha Stewart (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 7 January 2022 02:27 (three years ago)

ideally, yes. we have some knob and tube wiring left over for the lights on the ground floor, and it's on my long term list to update

chaos goblin line cook (sleeve), Friday, 7 January 2022 04:12 (three years ago)

and it does sometimes give me the willies, I don't trust that shit

chaos goblin line cook (sleeve), Friday, 7 January 2022 04:12 (three years ago)

you have an advantage b/c it's probably in an open space, ours would involve either some demo of the 100-year-old plaster/lathe walls or running conduits over the wall surface.

chaos goblin line cook (sleeve), Friday, 7 January 2022 04:13 (three years ago)

thanks. Good to get an unbiased opinion. I worry we might have to open some plaster walls to be sure it doesn't run down from the attic. Hard to tell with all of the blown-in insulation.
