jerky or worthy?

boxcubed (boxcubed), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

grate

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

in general or ilx-specific?

i rarely feel comfortable participating, but i guess they're a good thing overall. i mean, there are lots of funny things happening all the time that are context dependent and hard to convey - "you had to be there" - so it's natural for the folks who do 'get it' to share a few laughs.

of course it gets a bit annoying when it's dragged on and on

ron (ron), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

in general.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:15 (twenty-three years ago)

when you are in on them they are great of course, and they suck when everyone around you is smirking and laughing and you have no idea why.

actually i agree with ron, in that i sometimes feel uncomfortable if i know there are people present who have no clue. its a bit rude to keep going on with it in that case, and an explanation of the joke usually falls flat to the other people who 'werent there', so it dies anyway once you do that.

wW should probably explain some of these in-jokes in the FAQ. I may have USED some of them without quite understanding them.

WE should, that is

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:24 (twenty-three years ago)

the worst thing is when you let it start bugging you and then suddenly you become the 'fun hater'

i recall a certain night at college when a bunch of friends were visiting and kept me up all night giggling about 'snoop froggy frog' and 'lummi bucks'

ron (ron), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:26 (twenty-three years ago)

GREBT!

My whole brand of humour relies heavily on in-jokes. With each of my close friends we've developed an elaborate web of jokes and personal mythology, which are frequently and repetitively made reference to in conversation. Any 'outsider' overhearing us would be completely confused, and probably think we're insane. That's part of the appeal, in many ways.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Being a decidedly uncliqueish person, I'm afraid to say I hate in-jokes. I suppose (although perhaps in the light of what I've just said I'm biased) that it is also rather rude to make in-jokes in the company of people who won't be able to share in them. This may seem obvious, but I'm sure it's happened to me on many occasions and it's extremely off-putting.

Gordon (Gordon), Monday, 18 November 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't see anything wrong with them, and they are completely inevitable with any group of friends, IRL or on a message board. They're a bad thing if they are used in a way that tends to exclude. I didn't feel that was how ILE worked when I turned up here, though it took me a good while to properly understand some of them.

in jokes that don't exclude?

what in jokes are funny/clever?

boxcubed (boxcubed), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:20 (twenty-three years ago)

They're fine unless dragged on for too long.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

BLURILLAZ!!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

chickenbear!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

are ilx ref jokes actually in jokes, considering the ref points are in the public domain

boxcubed (boxcubed), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't have a conversation without relying heavily on in-jokes. If you heard me and my friends, you'd not understand anything we were talking about between the shouts of "Couferray!" and "yo dawg, I want some PEPSI".

And "blurrilaz" just made me shoot water like half out my nose.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be down with the clown 'till I'm dead in the ground!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)
