most items are now $1.25!

xzanfar, Thursday, 20 January 2022 17:24 (three years ago)

A better solution would have been to price everything as one 'dollar token' available at the entrance for $1.25, like at a fairground

Okay now I believe inflation is a real thing

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 20 January 2022 18:16 (three years ago)

inflation always renders cost-based nomenclature obsolete, like the 'five and dime store' and Motel 66

the headline I saw was that people were 'sick to their stomach' over this increase which seems like a bit of an overreaction

Two Buck Shrub
it could really be an opportunity for the 2 collar bill to finally catch on

The Dollar Tree down the street has a great deal on bagged ice... one dollar! Or maybe 1.25 now

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 20 January 2022 21:23 (three years ago)

xpost I saw the same headline

Dollar Tree probably does deserve a thread of it's own... in many dying bergs in the midwest & southeast, Dollar Tree is literally the only store left, and they usually demand serious tax breaks to bother expanding into these forgotten places

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 20 January 2022 21:25 (three years ago)

One opened up down the way (they took over half an existing auto parts store, and the building looks suspiciously like it was probably a Safeway in the distant past), and I've gone in a couple times, generally buying only spices etc. (kosher salt, paprika, garlic salt) and cleaning supplies

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 20 January 2022 21:28 (three years ago)

Oh, and candy... what used to be called penny candy

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 20 January 2022 21:29 (three years ago)

Where I live the same company operates Dollar General. This New Yorker story from last year was pretty bleak and horrifying, but I go to my local one a couple of times a week to buy soda and bread and whatnot.

they own family dollar too which is definitely more than a dollar now as is dollar general so they should just rename it as dollar plus tree!

xzanfar, Friday, 21 January 2022 02:01 (three years ago)

Dollar General was never an actual "Dollar Store", they just sell things priced at flat dollar prices ($2, $5, $8 etc.)

On more than one occasion I've been to a Dollar Store behind someone asking the cashier more or less repeatedly, "how much is this?"

"One dollar."
"How much is this?"
"A dollar."
"Is this a dollar?"
"Yes."

I can only assume this price increase is leading to long delays and chaos.

Good place to go to for party supplies/cheap decorations, poster board, mailing envelopes, baking pans, um ... that's about all I get there. I've seen people get vacuum packed steaks there, and I think, you know, better to just not eat meat than eat *that* meat.

We used to have The 95¢ Store in my neighbourhood, don't know what became of that.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 21 January 2022 15:35 (three years ago)

it changed names to the $2 store, but nobody knew it was the same store

For the longest time I thought Five Below was a store for winter gear, like North Face.

I've only driven by one on the 101 in Oxnard, and I've thought the same until now.

½ of ½ (Name Brand Clothing) offers to our customers the best department store and mall store name brands on current merchandise at the best possible prices, usually 1/2 of 1/2 of retail.

I still haven't figured out what this store is about. So, they're saying they sell their items at just a quarter of the retail price?

I guess if they called it "The Quarter Store", everyone would think all the prices were 25¢.

Could just call it 75% Off and be clear. Maybe a focus group thought Half of Half sounded smaller.

Could just call it 75% Off and be clear.

Reminds me of when the drummer from the Replacements (a quartet) released a solo album and called it 75% Less Fat.
