Euphoria HBO show

Also new season of Euphoria, back to reiterate that I'M OLD and don't understand the youngers

The general take I've seen on Twitter (based on soundtrack choices etc.) is that this show is very much an old person's look at These Kids Today With Their Depression And Their Hippety-Hop Music.

― but also fuck you (unperson)

We've been watching the show from the start, really because we just give all the HBO shows a shot. At first I would have agreed with the above but the kids are actually watching this show. My 13 year old niece got in some trouble this last week when her parents discovered she had been watching it because all her friends are into it too.

As far as the series goes this season had been pretty intense with some great acting sprinkled into questionable plot lines and unbelievable situations but i'm still watching.

anyways though it should have its own thread

I've mentioned my pet theory before, that I suspect a lot of these shows are written or created by people just far enough out of school that they sort of remember it, but not quite so close that they have any real idea what's actually going on right now. Their desire to shock or push boundaries is in essence an attempt to be the Cool Parent, the old person who totally gets it, man, unlike all those other lame, square adults.

I should ask my kid what she thinks of it, though I know in the past she's liked a lot of other ott high school set or high school age shows (Riverdale, Outer Banks, Shameless (?)) *because* of their melodramatic ridiculousness, not because of their finger on the pulse accuracy.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 16:48 (four years ago)

also a big part of this shows success is the actors themselves becoming quite popular and of the moment

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 9 February 2022 17:34 (four years ago)

The show is actually quite good. How ~true~ it is to the teenager of today is kind of a silly thing to get caught up on, of course it’s heightened and is (shocker!) made by adults. Kids, for better or worse, are definitely watching it, so it’s speaking to them on some level.

circa1916, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 17:49 (four years ago)

Like the movie KIDS was immensely popular with kids, even though it was nothing like what most kids (including myself) were going through at the time.

circa1916, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 17:51 (four years ago)

i love this show

marcos, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 18:11 (four years ago)

Was "Kids" popular with kids? Let alone "immensely" popular with "kids"? I mostly remember a lot of hand wringing that it *could* be popular with kids. I was a Gen X-er in college at the time, so of course neither I nor none of my friends saw it, since we all just cynically assumed it was bullshit.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 18:16 (four years ago)

also can you imagine if some of us (mentally ill, queer, neurodivergent, drug users) had a show like this to watch when we were in high school? i see so many reactions like "wtf is this, i went to math club in high school and one time drank one beer" and i'm like fine normie that's cool but some of us were fucked up and hung out with people even more fucked up. not gonna lie i had a much tamer and cushier adolescence than these kids but some of us go through some hard shit when we're teens.

marcos, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 18:19 (four years ago)

i was a kid (12 or 13) when kids came out and we fucking loved that movie. we were not having sex that young but the drinking & smoking and skateboarding and trying to act 25 when you're 13 resonated

marcos, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 18:21 (four years ago)

yeah the vibe as Marsha's apartment is definitely a little too familiar to some places i found myself stuck in xp

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 9 February 2022 18:48 (four years ago)

one of the highlights this season was the Fez and Ashtray back story for sure! love those guys

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 9 February 2022 18:49 (four years ago)

Just caught up with the last episode. Intense.

Yeah, this show rules.

I was a teen in the late 90s and early 00s and yes KIDS was very well known, at least in my sphere.

circa1916, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 20:16 (four years ago)

yeah the vibe as Marsha's Laurie's apartment is definitely a little too familiar to some places i found myself stuck in xp

sorry fixed

two weeks pass...

man this show went off the rails plotwise even though I found it highly entertaining. but nate redemption arc not good. and it made a huge deal about rue not getting into rehab and then kind of just went "oh but I was sober the rest of the year" uh ok?

akm, Tuesday, 1 March 2022 18:33 (four years ago)

most watched HBO show behind Game of Thrones now

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 1 March 2022 19:22 (four years ago)

season fell off majorly after the peak of ep 5 when rue is on the run

marcos, Tuesday, 1 March 2022 19:40 (four years ago)

lexi's play going on more than one episode was excruciating

kind of a drag that instead of revisiting the paths of some of its most interesting characters -- jules! kat! even rue, honestly, her arc was kind of abandoned after ep 5 as we endlessly flashed back to the post-funeral gathering at her house -- it became this insular, self-referential drama with maude apatow at the center of it

marcos, Tuesday, 1 March 2022 19:48 (four years ago)

agree, even though I like maude apatow and I thought the absurd staging of the play LOOKED incredible.

akm, Tuesday, 1 March 2022 20:58 (four years ago)

ten months pass...

3 episodes in and my immediate takeaway is that i have zero shock over any forthcoming fallout from people involved in the show.

https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/euphoria-season-3-delay-rewrites-time-jump-zendaya-script-notes-1235955045/

Sources tell Variety that Levinson, who exerts full creative control over the show, writing and directing every episode, proposed his vision for the season in winter 2023, featuring a time jump five years into the future for the former students of East Highland High School. HBO thought his pitch and early drafts for the season — which included meaty arcs for Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi that a source described as “very compelling” — were a strong start. But after the WGA strike ended, and as the full scripts began coming in, they didn’t pass muster with Zendaya, “Euphoria’s” two-time Emmy-winning star who is now 27 years old.

...

When Levinson turned in his revised scripts in late 2023 and early 2024, HBO execs were now the ones feeling unsatisfied. There was a new arc for Zendaya’s Rue, whose character in Levinson’s first pass had been relegated to the background in a somewhat surprising storyline about her working as a private detective, which HBO had immediately vetoed. Among many other ideas for the rewrites, Zendaya had pitched an idea in which Rue, who is now sober as a twentysomething young woman, would be a pregnancy surrogate. But insiders say the new scripts simply didn’t feel like the show tonally.

...

Although Zendaya has yet to read Levinson’s new scripts, sources say the third season isn’t dead and could very well come together. HBO has freed up the cast for the rest of 2024, promising to come back to them on Oct. 1 with a solid plan to begin filming in 2025. The shoot, if were it to happen, would tie up the cast for 25 weeks, and the season will likely be reduced from eight episodes to six — though if Levinson were to need more, HBO is open to it.

They should jump it forward 10,000 years and set it on a planet full of magic sand and giant worms.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 March 2024 13:20 (one year ago)

the show people should buy some of those brain boost smoothies. you can get them at whole foods. maybe that will give them ideas for how to do show.

scott seward, Friday, 29 March 2024 13:34 (one year ago)

The next season should be about high schoolers abusing brain booster smoothies and then competing against each other to get into college. (I have never seen this show, for all I know that's what it is about.)

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 March 2024 13:36 (one year ago)

haha, this show is never coming back now

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Friday, 29 March 2024 13:40 (one year ago)

Omg to imagine it occurred to Levinson to turn Rue into a private investigator

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 29 March 2024 20:07 (one year ago)

he saw some Veronica Mars and was like... yes, let's do that

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 29 March 2024 20:18 (one year ago)

if Zendaya was a private detective masquerading as a pregnancy surrogate, they would have greenlit the script

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 29 March 2024 20:25 (one year ago)

one year passes...

kind of insane that this IS coming back in April, and the returning actors are the ones who definitely don't need the show for their careers (Sweeney, Elordi, Zendaya)

in retrospect, it's trash with trauma underpinning each character, in different proportions than someone like a Ryan Murphy would attempt? I rewatched some old nip/tuck episodes a while ago and it's roooough. Euphoria is more manipulative in its trauma

also I'm pretty sure Levinson and everyone else involved will continue to pretend that THE IDOL never happened

mh, Sunday, 1 March 2026 23:01 (three days ago)

the Idol is fucking hilarous to look back on, one of the worst things HBO has ever produced, it's impressive how bad it is.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 2 March 2026 22:16 (two days ago)

a long enough gap between s2 and s3 that not one but two actors died in the interim (angus cloud and eric dane, tho it sounds like the latter shot at least some scenes for s3).

jaymc, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 00:38 (yesterday)

The Idol also has a cast that certainly captures its moment (The Weeknd, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Troye Savan, Moses Sumney). And Jane Adams is fantastic in it.

Come On, (Eazy), Tuesday, 3 March 2026 00:41 (yesterday)

There are a few hints in the casting (Jane Adams being the obvious tell) and a few other bits that make me think Amy Seimetz was bumped out of The Idol at a later stage than they tried to pretend. It’s just amazing how *boring* some longer scenes are, and those are the ones that make you question whether there’s any semblance of a coherent plot
