Apologies in advance, raising the question in sincerity, as I was curious because I go back and forth.

white-american pls

I use the white/pink thumbs up, but I'm not sure I've ever really given it a lot of thought. There are a lot of hand gestures that are default yellow in my phone emoji gallery, so I use those too. Have never thought about that yellow as racially coded, more as a Simpsons cartoon color. But it's an interesting question.

The argument in that article that Simpsons yellow is actually white within the Simpsons universe is also valid, obv.

that npr article connects the yellow emojis to the Simpsons, but they're an evolution from the yellow smiley face logo which predates the Simpsons by 15-20 years, no?

Missing option: There's a white thumbs up emoji?

Bastards of Fish (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 February 2022 19:51 (three years ago)

my partner uses brown emojis, so it felt weird to respond to her texts with yellow ones. but then when I'm texting a white person who uses yellow, I sometimes wonder if they think it's weird I use the white ones. in short: idk

rob, Thursday, 10 February 2022 19:55 (three years ago)

Simpsons yellow seems closest to neutral.

I was afraid this thread was going to be about the hand position, not the color

I have a decidedly white friend who has in recent years taken on a social media persona that might be described by some as “performatively woke” and I have seen him use the brown hanclap and maybe the brown facepalm and it is v cringe and v funny

chang.eng partition (wins), Thursday, 10 February 2022 20:01 (three years ago)

the arguments in the article seem similar to the handwringing about whether 'white' (as in the racial category) should be spelt with a capital W if you're also spelling Black with a capital B, where not using the capital W is bad because it presents whiteness as the default rather than just another race, allows white people to avoid confronting their white privilege, but using the capital W is also bad because it confers legitimacy on whiteness, it's problematic to have white people consciously identifying with their white identity unless they are explicitly 'white abolitionists' who are making sure they never get comfortable or complacent in their whiteness. Maybe white people should use the white emojis, but with an asterisk next to it to let everyone know they feel bad about being white?

soref, Thursday, 10 February 2022 20:03 (three years ago)

if only the white emoji could also clearly have leprosy

I was just reading a history of LEGO minifigure "yellow" which seems relevant:

This is Android erasure

(does android even have different skin tones? I don't use a lot of emojis)

do Androids dream of eclectic emojis?

This is the dumbest thing ever. The only emoji I ever use is the elephant followed by the blowing wind, to make it look like it's farting.

I assume farts make up about 98 percent of uses of the wind emoji.

I just wish people would stop using the prayer-hands emoji, the most passive-aggressive of all emojis.

Lily Dale, Friday, 11 February 2022 00:26 (three years ago)

is there a better option for saying "thank you"?

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 11 February 2022 00:44 (three years ago)

I guess not. I just find it often goes along with "I'm asking you this but assuming you'll say yes, so it's not really a question" type texts.

Lily Dale, Friday, 11 February 2022 00:50 (three years ago)

But probably I would be equally annoyed by the same text with a "thanks" at the end, so I take back my objection.

Lily Dale, Friday, 11 February 2022 00:51 (three years ago)

Emojis are dehumanizing by their very nature. The correct answer is to type “thumbsup.emoji”

I use yellow to match my shade of jaundice.

NB: do NOT type “whitethumbsup.emoji”

Emojis are a stiff belt of whiskey for the passive-aggression-a-holic.

I have done this but with spaces, e.g. “thumbs up emoji”.

Well “thanks (in advance)” to actually mean “please” is kind of obnoxious and passive aggressive in emoji form or otherwise. I use the prayer hands sometimes to say thank you to someone who has actually done or offered to do something for me, which sounds like a different case from your experience.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 11 February 2022 14:05 (three years ago)

The standard in Messenger is blue, so that's the only one I've ever used. Apparently, you can do yellow as well (as a regular emoji, not the "thumbs up" button). No options for actual skin tones.

did you know that the facebook messenger one gets larger when you hold it?

That white hand is really really white.

It doesn't look like own swarthy hand so no.

And the first one looks more rosy than beige.
