Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 11:27 (three years ago)

I never did finish last year's 10-year anniversaries for years ending in "1" either. Must get on that...

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 11:28 (three years ago)

love a lot of these but its Fanny & Alexander by a wide country mile

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 12:13 (three years ago)

My top ten a few years ago:

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg)
Shoot the Moon (Alan Parker)
Tootsie (Sydney Pollack)
Burden of Dreams (Les Blank)
Diner (Barry Levinson)
Moonlighting (Jerzy Skolimowski)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (Nicholas Meyer)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Amy Heckerling)
Personal Best (Robert Towne)
Mephisto (Istvan Szabo)

HONORABLE MENTIONS: The Thing (John Carpenter), Veronika Voss (Rainer Werner Fassbinder)

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 12:57 (three years ago)

One of those years where my formative upbringing in horror can't be tamped down...

Poltergeist (Tobe Hooper, USA)
Creepshow (George A. Romero, USA)
Tenebrae (Dario Argento, Italy)
The King of Comedy (Martin Scorsese, USA)
E.T.—The Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, USA)
White Dog (Samuel Fuller, USA)
Dimensions of Dialogue (Jan Svankmajer, Czechoslovakia)
Vice Squad (Gary A. Sherman, USA)
Querelle (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany)
Fanny & Alexander (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden)

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 13:08 (three years ago)

ooh White Dog -- for sure.

I might've included F&A in 1983 but still think the movie errs in showing little interest in Fanny.

Isn't The King of Comedy 1983?

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 13:13 (three years ago)

I was at the mercy of IMDB making my lists. I know that's one of the most glaring "no way" year discrepancies from that method.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 13:16 (three years ago)

I think I've seen 15 from the top list and 6 from the bottom. Some good directors in decline (Herzog, Wenders, Antonioni), some just getting underway (Greenaway, Tarr).

Best film on lower list: Toute Une Nuit
Best musical cue in a weak film: "Sons of Pioneers" by Japan in Identification of a Woman
Worst film: The Thing
Disappointment: Passion, one of Godard's coldest
Best film not on the list: Béla Tarr's two-shot TV movie of Macbeth
Films I'd most like to see: the two Raúl Ruiz movies
Embarrassing admission: I get confused between Yol and Yor, Hunter from the Future
Voted for: Koyaanisqatsi

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 13:29 (three years ago)

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 13:53 (three years ago)

I do not much care for Godard in the early '80s.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 13:54 (three years ago)

I'm also indifferent to Old Master paintings, which doesn't help when watching Passion.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 14:04 (three years ago)

this is a good reminder that i've had Moonlighting on my shelf for years now and never got around to it, will have to remedy that soon

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 14:29 (three years ago)

It's gonna be E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Tootsie, or The Thing. This morning I'm not feeling the arthouse choices.

How many feature films have been made based on rock LPs (not including "video albums" or things that were originally meant as stage shows, like Hair)?

Tommy (1975)
Sgt. Pepper's (1978)
Quadrophenia (1979)
Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982)

Any others?

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 15:47 (three years ago)

good point - my Fanny & Alexander vote was in honor of the long version, even though I'm not certain when that actually got its first release, might have been 83. I've never seen the 3hr version either & have no desire to.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 16:19 (three years ago)

I presume that the TSPDT version that's ranked is the full-length.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 17:05 (three years ago)

The full-length F&A is the only way to watch that film.

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 18:01 (three years ago)

I actually kind of prefer the shorter version, but I need to give the miniseries another try

Bobcat Goldthwait was developing a film adaptation of the Kinks' School Boys In Disgrace that ultimately never happened, and Julia Phillips approached Don'n'Glenn about a Hotel California film that also obviously never happened. So I think you've listed them all.

a spectre is haunting your mom (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 18:34 (three years ago)

is purple rain a rock lp?

It's a soundtrack to the movie, the movie isn't a dramatization of the story of the record.

There was also supposed to be a Lamb Lies Down on Broadway film at one point. I thought somebody might have made a movie out of a record by Green Day or someone like them.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 18:41 (three years ago)

American Idiot hasn't been filmed yet.

Forgot about Willie Nelson doing a Red-Headed Stranger movie in the '80s.

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 18:42 (three years ago)

There was the TV special Starmaker in 1974, but that predated The Kinks Present a Soap Opera album.

If that counts, than so does Serge Gainsbourg's Melody Nelson special.

Poltergeist (Tobe Hooper, USA)

Just watched this recently, first viewing in a long time... I'd forgotten just how completely Spielbergian this film actually is

Busy year for him

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:09 (three years ago)

How many feature films have been made based on rock LPs

Not rock, but they made a film version of Kenny Rogers' Coward of the County.... starring Kenny himself

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:13 (three years ago)

There's also Kenny as The Gambler, but those are just single story songs made into movies. They did the same with Ode to Billy Joe, Harper Valley PTA, etc.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:16 (three years ago)

1982 also included Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:21 (three years ago)

I've made a new thread to discuss this:

Concept albums that were later made into movies?

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:23 (three years ago)

I don’t get The Thing at all. Blade Runner has its virtues but I never thought it was a particularly good PKD adaptation; Total Recall is superior. I like Fast Times a lot, but it seems too minor? Fanny & Alexander has masterful parts but feels disjointed somehow (yes, not enough Fanny). Really not sure how to vote here. Seriously considering Tootsie.

Josefa, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:23 (three years ago)

fuck it, I may join you, Josefa. btw this:

Honestly I haven’t seen a lot of these movies.

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:25 (three years ago)

The Wrath of Khan is probably my favourite on either list.

jmm, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:26 (three years ago)

Diner is a 1982 American bromantic comedy film written and directed by Barry Levinson.

visiting, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:26 (three years ago)

Diner I loathed. It’s been too long since seeing ET and I doubt I’d feel much, same with Poltergeist.

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:27 (three years ago)

Blade Runner is to PKD what The Shining is to Stephen King... the books sparked the original screenplay, but I don't think they're meant to be faithful adaptations

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:28 (three years ago)

Mazursky's Tempest is surely the biggest flop of '82? Budget was thirteen million, box office took in five

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:32 (three years ago)

none of the others come close to Fanny and Alexander for me, thought that film was just about perfect

Dan S, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 00:35 (three years ago)

so how do you address the criticism about its ignoring of Fanny?

I'm not putting you on the spot, I'm just curious.

I tend to think the opening dinner scene runs long, but I've seen the film four times and made my peace with it.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 March 2022 00:38 (three years ago)

it was notable, but it didn't detract from the film for me

"Bergman said Fanny was based on his own sister. The complicated nature of that relationship — the two were very distant as adults; she had writerly ambitions — may explain the strange mixture of prominence in the title and sketchiness in the film itself that Fanny is afforded."

Dan S, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 00:53 (three years ago)

It's remarkable how Woody Allen pilfers the opening scene for the Thanksgiving party in Hannah and Her Sisters.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 March 2022 00:57 (three years ago)

It’s admittedly weird that the movie is named after her but I’ve never felt the film suffers as a result of her small role any more than it does for any of the other supporting characters. If it were instead called Alexander and His Family it would be the same film

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 30 March 2022 01:04 (three years ago)

The only two RWFs I really can't stand (I've seen over 30)are "Querelle" (drugs do take their toll) and "Satan's Brew" (wacky farce was not his forte, and this is the painful evidence).

The Verdict may not be the best film on the list, but it's one of Newman's best performances.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 7 April 2022 14:33 (three years ago)

Saw it again in February. The plot contrivances are a drag in a film whose surface realism impresses me: it looks and feels like late '81/early '82. But those scenes between Newman and the louse of a judge and anytime Mason's on screen still crackle. Mason and Newman don't say a word to each other the entire film (there's a good moment when Mason's lawyer looks about to say something to Newman, changes his mind as if in pity, and walks away).

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 April 2022 14:58 (three years ago)

Mason and Newman don't say a word to each other the entire film

Seen it probably 10 times and never thought about that--interesting. (The moment when Mason almost speaks to him is memorable.)

Jack Warden's excellent too.
