Concept albums that were later made into movies?

I'm moving this discussion from the films of 1982 thread:

How many feature films have been made based on rock LPs (not including "video albums" or things that were originally meant as stage shows, like Hair)?

Tommy (1975)
Sgt. Pepper's (1978)
Quadrophenia (1979)
Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982)

Any others?

Bobcat Goldthwait was developing a film adaptation of the Kinks' School Boys In Disgrace that ultimately never happened, and Julia Phillips approached Don'n'Glenn about a Hotel California film that also obviously never happened. So I think you've listed them all.

is purple rain a rock lp?

It's a soundtrack to the movie, the movie isn't a dramatization of the story of the record.

There was also supposed to be a Lamb Lies Down on Broadway film at one point. I thought somebody might have made a movie out of a record by Green Day or someone like them.

American Idiot hasn't been filmed yet.

Forgot about Willie Nelson doing a Red-Headed Stranger movie in the '80s.

There was the TV special Starmaker in 1974, but that predated The Kinks Present a Soap Opera album.

If that counts, than so does Serge Gainsbourg's Melody Nelson special.

How many feature films have been made based on rock LPs

Not rock, but they made a film version of Kenny Rogers' Coward of the County.... starring Kenny himself

There's also Kenny as The Gambler, but those are just single story songs made into movies. They did the same with Ode to Billy Joe, Harper Valley PTA, etc.

Unmade, but PG and Jodorowski actually wrote a script for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Okay, maybe this doesn't count but apparently Jesus Christ Superstar was released in album form before it ever took to the stage or screen, yet it was always intended to be a musical

Initially unable to get backing for a stage production, the composers released it as a concept album, the success of which led to the show's Broadway on-stage debut in 1971

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 19:54 (three years ago)

Yeah, I wouldn't count something like Neil Young's Greendale either, because the film and the record were conceived and created at the same time, and you could say the record is the soundtrack of the movie as much as the movie is an adaptation of the record.

Would Talking Heads True Stories fall under that as well?

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 20:00 (three years ago)

There's this really stupid concept album called ROCK JUSTICE i found crate digging. Marty Balin wrote it while he was suing Jefferson Airplane and it's a fantasy about a rock star suing his band and getting JUSTICE. I SWEAR I saw a full filmed stage performance of it (Think CATS on VHS 1988) on the internet once but I can't find it now!

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 20:04 (three years ago)

Yes, and I guess I'm thinking about LPs that already have defined characters, plots etc. (which might actually disallow the Sgt. Pepper's movie). Like someone could write a script around the True Stories songs completely different from what Byrne came up with, there's no intrinsic narrative there.

I read about Rock Justice in the Book of Rock Lists! I'm sure filmed stage performances are more common than what I'm trying to come up with.

A work-in-progress trailer turned up online about a decade ago for a purported movie based on "(Music From) The Elder" by Kiss. From the YT comments, sounds about right:

we can wait forever it's never coming seems this "movie" was just a scam money grab they used to have a website where u could donate money for them to make this movie... and then nothing...

Not sure about 'concept' album, but Tenacious D's Pick of Destiny was a film based on an album

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 20:12 (three years ago)

It's very funny that the Elder movie still has pages on Wikipedia and IMDB, as if 10 years after the trailer, the feature's just round the corner. Also that someone would try to borrow any "intellectual" property connected with Gene Simmons.

Didn't Daft Punk do this?

Maresn3st, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 21:02 (three years ago)

I was thinking maybe Styx’ Kilroy Was Here, but the short film based on the record came out around the same time.

I hate that I know that.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978)

I haven't seen this, so I couldn't tell you if it qualifies for this thread.

"God Help the Girl" (2009 album) from Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian, who also directed the 2014 film.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978)

I watched it a few years ago, and it's mostly cocaine-fueled garbage. Yes, there are songs from that album, but a bunch of non-Pepper's tunes as well. The real problem with this film is that they try to tell the story only using Beatles lyrics... there's no dialogue that's not sung. So the plot is pretty thin as they string these tunes together, a hodge-podge of guest stars, Aerosmith wearing nazi uniforms, etc. Alice Cooper's version of Because is a high point among many low points.

Why the band agreed to this mess is beyond me
