curious after many years of being secretive, how everybody else is with this. do you share publicly where you work, on social media (i.e. Facebook), LinkedIn, etc, personal website, or are you more secretive about it?

for me, it's "I tell my friends where I work, but I will not share my employer online, even in a passing Slack chat."

ever since an innocent FB message got all the way back to my boss and got me a 'talking to', I removed all traces of where I work from everything on the internet. only time I will mention is if someone asks me if my company is hiring and I have to pass them the link to the Jobs page.

I'm also afraid if I make friends with the wrong douchebag, and we start squabbling, that someone will run tattling to my employer, telling them what a low moral character employee they have, and sharing evidence, fabricated or "real", which is a dick move that is apparently a thing people do.

out of all of my friends, only like 5 of them know where I work, and two of them work there with me lol. but that's more me just not wanting to talk about work outside of work than being afraid that my best friend will weaponize this knowledge against me.

I have a few other friends who list jokey jobs like "Nunia Business", so I was curious. some friends I've never known where they work either, others post about it non-stop.

my FB says I work at "Fay Canoes" and for many years I jokingly listed that I sold drugs, but opted to change that when my company's spinoff was occurring, as we had to go through background checks again.

"list it all the fuck over social media" ...

sarahell, Monday, 25 July 2022 19:09 (three years ago)

from the other thread

non-profit culture (at least here in the US) generally expects you to list your employer on FB (and social media) and do outreach (and often fundraising) for your employer via your social network. ... I've seen a lot of awkwardness around this, esp. when the org gets called out for something.

sarahell, Monday, 25 July 2022 19:11 (three years ago)

I am definitely less ostentatious about it than a lot of my peers though ... like, my personal email doesn't have a sig file with professional links and info.

sarahell, Monday, 25 July 2022 19:16 (three years ago)

There was a time when I was the "face" of my employer (editor of a music magazine); fortunately, that was 2005-2009, so pre-social media. Now I have several jobs going at once, which are listed on LinkedIn — some of what I do requires certification on specific programs, so telling people that I do that thing may help me get more work doing it — but nowhere else. The exception, obviously, is my freelance writing work, which I need to promote, and do, splattering links to articles all over the place.

If I happen to talk about my non-writing work anywhere, though, it will be in only the vaguest terms.

For example, a week ago I posted on LinkedIn, "Is there anything more frustrating than working on a project you (and the person who assigned it to you) already know is doomed, but you're being paid to drag its stinking carcass across the finish line anyway?" A few days later, I was on a call with the project manager in question, who laughed...and then thanked me for not naming the company or the client in that post, and apologized for giving me such a shitty assignment.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 25 July 2022 19:16 (three years ago)

lol i meant no shade by that sarahell, sorry. agree sometimes the decision is made FOR you, depending on the job you're doing. and I don't think one behavior or the other is wrong, i'm just curious as to whether people are as mega-paranoid as I am.

I remember typing the name of a proprietary product in an ILX message once, and there's an Mod thread I posted panicked asking to get rid of it while trying not to say its name again.

My friends and family know where I work. On social media I try to keep it private. It’s not a huge deal but in this era (let’s say the last decade or so) it feels like a risk to be too public about it.

Also I am (intentionally) not connected on Insta or FB to anyone I work with. Life is hard enough as it is.

I stopped accepting/making friend requests to colleagues years ago, but didn't have the heart to 'defriend' someone and get a sad 'y we no friens' email from them. so I just put them all in an excluded group and set all my statuses to exclude that group from seeing posts.

but since cover photos are public, I can't post mega satanic shit or hyper inflammatory shit as long as they are on my list, so maybe I should just lie and tell them my FB died and axe them.

(I mean I could, but a lot of them are religious and I don't want Chick Tracts)

I teach on / manage pre-sessional courses at ***redacted university*** and late last year was training a group of international students in how to make presentations. At one point, to describe getting over nerves by speaking in a deliberate & measured way, I described how I had felt the first time I was live on the radio. Within 60 seconds one student had found my profile on an online podcaster database, which for some reason had my (anonymous) personal twitter account linked, had followed that link, and began reading out my tweets to the class, fortunately I hadn't been posting about politics that day, but it was a nightmare anyway.

So I had to lock all of my personal accounts, professional ones are still open of course, but I'm keeping them bland and largely opinion-free. And had to make a complaint about the student of course.

yes, as far as I can tell, just to be a dick.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 25 July 2022 20:48 (three years ago)

my main concern is i don't really want work to follow my socials so occasionally i lock my twitter down. though i think mostly no one cares. except my nightmare manager, i'm sure she would care, and use that information to drop cryptic passive aggressive references six months from now.

absolutely. i've added coworkers before, never again though. unless we no longer work for the same org. generally speaking i keep friends and coworkers separate now.

i have a linkedin profile for when i've had to job search but i stay away from it unless absolutely necessary.

i do djing as a side gig and that's the polar opposite, however. pulling people to gigs, being friends irl and online, sharing photos etc is all intertwined.

I have a rule that I only add people on social media after I stop working with them, this has been bent a little in recent years as I am in a somewhat small industry (2 former coworkers now work with me and one of them is my boss)

Oh hell yeah it's all over social media. A couple coworkers and I follow each other on Instagram but no friending on FB.

I've worked in media ever since I quit delivering pizzas. Used my name all over the place. Hell, I don't work there anymore, but if you call 1-800-477-1037 and ask for an ass kicking, someone there will pass on your contact info to me.

The Internet changed up a lot of stuff though. I've never had any problems getting hounded down or anything, but having ILX show up in my last company's Google Analytics weirded me out a little. I'll stand behind most of what I say here, but hell, I've been posting random crap here for almost 20 years. (I tell everyone IRL that my login name is "Doctor Casino".)

So I'm a little cagier now about revealing where I work. Which is funny in a way since my new employer blasted the news of my hiring across everything save for TikTok.

I post about bartending/cocktail stuff occasionally but I never tag or name the restaurant. It's the only place with a bar in my town, though, so locals know its name. The owner has tagged me a couple of times when he posts about drink specials. I absolutely never let anyone from my old dayjob, a showstock magazine, get anywhere near me on FB.

WmC, Tuesday, 26 July 2022 20:31 (three years ago)

Ha, I was asked about this the other day because someone told me they noticed I never talked about it much. I used to more often and I haven't hid where I'm at necessarily but I prefer just sharing general announcements, and while I have numerous work-related connections on LinkedIn, that's it in terms of social media; I use LinkedIn for its intended purpose -- professional work -- and as a result barely post there anyway.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 July 2022 23:08 (three years ago)

I'm pretty guarded about what I put out there publicly. I've seen enough of my friends go through stupid bullshit to know that public social media isn't a good place for someone like me. Honestly this is about the only place where I engage with other people on the public Internet.

I'm pretty open about where I work with my friends outside of the public Internet. I tend not to name it directly, but it's a large organization and pretty easy to guess for anyone familiar with the area where I live. I only tend to bring it up when it's relevant, but within the community I'm part of, the field I work in is relevant _a lot_.
