Does anyone know the Mile End area? Is there much crime? Specifically, is mugging a problem there?

This is all very mundane, I know, but if I could pick your brains a little further, Gareth ... In two weeks time, for reasons far too dreary to go into, I am likely to be in Mile End at around two in the morning. I understand the tubes don't run so late, so how viable is getting a taxi to go south of the river?

i've no idea! if you arrange one beforehand that should be no problem at all should it?

There are a couple of minicab offices right next to Mile End tube which would probably take you okay... in theory it's not that expensive to get to eg, Greenwich, cos you can nip through the Blackwall Tunnel.

In the year and a half I have lived there I have never seen any trouble at all in Mile End (famous last words...), obviously wherever you go in London there is an element of risk but I certainly feel a lot safer in Mile End than I do in Brixton/Soho/Camden, etc.

Having said that, I have never been aware of much to do at 2 in the morning, is there something I'm missing out on?!

Besides which, what's wrong with nite buses? I take them and I'm a weak and feeble woman, innit. The N25

will take you to the river/centre of town, whence shurely a bus to take you home can be found.

Andrew - Thanks. RE:'... I have never been aware of much to do at 2 in the morning, is there something I'm missing out on?!' I'm sure many people would be surprised: scenes in countless movies were shot in the wee small hours in the East End - in some old Church, in some old alley. Traffic and general city noise are of course attenuated by the night, and over-tired supporting actor are required to do the most humiliating things.

Gareth, could you arrange a taxi for me?
