Who should go on Second Chance Idol?

This is apparently the next phase in the media pantechnicon that is "Pop Idol" where pop stars with a suspiciously long gap separating now from their last appearance in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles get a second chance of a career.

In Britain, I have heard names like Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones and Chesney Hawkes being bandied about - not to mention Renato out of Renee and Renato, who once sang at my cousin's wedding! - and in the US I hear of Tiffany and Debbie Gibson being tipped as possible contestants.

So, who should be on this frankly humiliating/enormously philanthropic and anti-ageist (delete where appropriate) idea of a programme, and who should win?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Personally, I'd like to see the format changed to something like 'You're shite and you know you are'.

Contestants then compete to prove they are not shite.

The great thing about this programme is that there would be no winners and they all get declared shite. We are then spared all the slaughtered cover versions, and programmes featuring the 'tortured' lives of these Z-list 'celebrities'. The newspapers would go back to reporting on something novel called 'news' and we could look forward to listening to musicians on the radio and TV that write their own songs, play their own instruments and have that magic ingredient - talent.

CJ I like you, but that last sentence of yours veers dangerously close to the dreaded demon we know as Derek Dull.

mark s will tell you all about him if you ask him nicely.

Sigh. I remember having this argument 6 years ago on ama.

yep - the Colonel could defeat Rick Astley as a punishment for stealing all his vocal mannerisms and making them sound shit ("Trapped" is wonderful, "Never Gonna Give You Up" attempts to disembowel it, but can't detract from Abrams' magnificence).
