Fries piled on a plate with literally nothing else on it, just a huge plateful of golden fries. When I was seven years old and being bullied at my school in the Marshall Islands and dreading lunch and recess, every so often my dad would show up to the school unexpectedly to rescue me and take me to the Quick Stop Coffee Shop, where he would let me order an entire plate of fries and nothing else.

Fries are probably objectively best in either a square-ish cardboard container or in a cone that means you're actually in Belgium, but I can't be objective; I see a plate full of fries and my heart is all, "GRAB YOUR THINGS I'VE COME TO TAKE YOU HOME."

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 14:10 (two years ago)

There are no bad answers obviously because they all involve fries, but the red plastic baskets with the red and white tablecloth is such a childhood touchstone for me. Because it not only meant I had fries, it meant I had them in someplace cool and fun. Probably a place with at least three flavors of ice cream.

i definitely missed some wonderful options in this poll and i am glad people are pointing them out.

i like the wax paper packet because the salt and oil collects on the nubs at the bottom and they're wickedly good if they don't get too cold first.

i've never had fries in the metal deep fryer cube but it seems to be really popular at sit-down restaurants that serve burgers elsewhere. i'm not a fan but i get the utility of it.

(grim) pump track (wales) (map), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 14:44 (two years ago)

the metal cube allows the fries to stand up, slightly fancier presentation then the basket but yeah durable, reusable, easy to clean, only potential waste is if they put some wax paper liner in there

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 14:59 (two years ago)

to me red plastic basket + red checked paper = Dairy Queen (who have nasty fries these days just like Burger King... they just kind of gave up even trying and use those disgusting fake-crispy starch-coated ones)

Jaime Pressly and America (f. hazel), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 15:01 (two years ago)

Chili's switched from a basket to the metal cube and now you get like 1/3rd the amount of fries so in my mind the metal cube is just a way to dazzle you so you don't notice you're getting ripped off.

Jaime Pressly and America (f. hazel), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 15:03 (two years ago)

lots of great options, probably between paper packet and red basket for me.

I don't think I've ever seen fries in a mug though, does that one have a specific context?

rob, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 17:17 (two years ago)

Maybe it's just because I almost never get fries to go, so I don't see the cardboard containers or paper packets . But I almost never see metal baskets, pails, or mugs here. That only leaves paper cone with frame, which I only see at the brasserie that's trying to do the Belgian frites thing, and the red basket with wax paper (which is firmly part of the Midwestern experience).

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 17:18 (two years ago)

You want paper to soak up the grease, but not the cardboard box takeout container which keeps the steam trapped in making them soggy.

Went for paper cone in wire frame thingy, but preference is freshly dumped on a plate next to accompanying sandwich.

Osama bin Chinese (gyac), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 19:08 (two years ago)

Fries in a paper cone can totally go either way. Belgian fries that are crisp and perfect and in a cone are the best. But when fancy American brewery-restaurants want to trick you into thinking their limp, greasy brown fries are artisanal and supposed to be that way, they always put them in a cone and give you a little cup of aioli on the side.

(grim) pump track (wales) (map), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 18:07 (two years ago)

What I used to like about going to Five Guys was that they'd give you a cup of fries like in the picture above, but then just pour an additional scoop of fries into the bag, on top of the burger and fries you'd already gotten. It was effectively two orders of fries for the price of one. I haven't eaten at Five Guys in several years, though, so I don't know if they still do that.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 18:39 (two years ago)

Well, there are degrees of crispy. I would certainly prefer soft fries to the BK-style overdone ones rightly excoriated upthread. However, crispy fries, done right, slay soft fries.

Best fries I have had recently were from Wayback Burgers. Their burgers are inoffensive and unremarkable, but their fries are perfection.

fresh out the fryer and into a wide guy, like the red basket, number one

if it's not as fresh, like delivery or plenty of fast food places, might as well put it in one of those cardboard coffins to maintain some of its fry-ness before air turns them into unrecognizable supposedly organic matter

i'd vote for "a plate" if i could, but it's not in the options, which is fair, because fries go on plate not in plate

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 20:40 (two years ago)

also super insulating things are not good because sometimes the fries go bad before they even get to a tolerable heat level (i want warm fries, not scorching hot fries), which is like an insane quantum state wherein they are both OLD and STILL HOT. disgusting. im thinknig about that now and getting a little mad in my head. it should not be possible

ironically around a month ago I had my first McDonald's in decades, an order of fries, it was delicious. last week I tried another small order from Carl's Jr and it wasn't quite as good.

I also had an absolute disaster once trying to make fries at home via this weird recipe that involved low heat in the fry oil for a longer period. I believe Stevie D had success with this but I did not.

curly fries = instant vomit (and I used to be the dude who would order the largest curly at Arby's and dip it in horsie sauce and just go to town in front of the tv).
