Anyone tried this famed Scottish delicacy? and lived to tell the tale.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad did and he's still around, said it's not as bad as you'd think. He said they did Bounty's too.

Plinky (Plinky), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

haven't tried but i'd like to.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I've tried a bite of Elisabeth's and think they're tastier than normal Mars bars, but something about them just makes me uncomfortable.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Never tried them, of course down here they dont even cook chips right never mind mars bars so I am doomed!

Fuzzy Wuzzy (Madam Plinky), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I did once, although only in Oxford so it may not have been very authentic. It looked horrible but it was actually quite nice. I did feel very ill afterwards, but that was probably more because I'd already eaten one meal and half of someone else's that evening. (No wonder I could do with losing a couple of stone, eh? Mind you I didn't need to then, strangely.)

(Rebecca, maybe you should familiarise yourself with the process of cause and effect, hmmm? :-) [generic stop-worrying,-you're-gorge comment])

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

fried twix are much much better.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

The concept of the deep fried pizza slice scares me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i've tried fried ice-cream (tempura aisu kuh-reem-uh). it's not as good/bad as you think.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

DEEP FRIED TWINKIES ARE AMAZING. I SAW THIS TV SHOW ON A RESTAURANT IN NYC THAT SPECIALIZES IN THESE SORT OF THINGS.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't see why you would have had to. why would you possibly have had to?

I think I had fried ice cream in the czech republic.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a restaurant here in Richmond that serves fried pickles. They are great.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Never had deep fried mars bars, but did have deep fried pizza after finishing a 50 mile walk around the Scottish Highlands... it was greasy, and much needed after 4 days in the wilderness... I think I'd have to spend another 4 days in the wilderness to try it again though.

Celeste (Celeste), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to try deep-frying my dark chocolate toffee pops some day.

Livvie, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

But then they get back to their senses.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 08:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I try to have a deep fried mars everytime I find a shop that does them even though my teeth are so sore I can't eat or drink for a couple of hours. At this one shop you can get them in junior or MANSIZE!!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The best thing I've ever heard of is this:

Your trusty chip shop fryer bloke takes a pizza and puts a burger on one side. The pizza is then folded in half, dipped in batter and, you've guessed it, deep fried. Yumski.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

that's the most insane thing i've ever heard.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone tried wrapping a pizza around a Mars bar, etc.?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Anybody who has worked in a restaurant kitchen has deep fried weirder things than that.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

shoelaces work particularly well.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Rebecca, where did you see Deep Fried Mars Bars is Scotland? I asked for one at "Hassan's Cuisine", and they totally laughed and refused.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 March 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Had deep fried Mars Bar at A Salt and Battery, NYC.

Taste reminded me of sopapillas, which I never see outside of the southwest. Fluffy fried tortilla dough pockets filled with honey -- same feeling of biting through bready/fried and having liquidy/sweet gush out.

Could only eat half. Heavy. Greeeezy. Especially after full fish-and-chip dinner. Made sounds like: blurgh. Oof. Took "one last" bite. Made sounds like: awwghf. Horkle.

Verdict: delicious but Wrong.

Also it looks like an egg roll. And when you bite into it you feel like you're biting into an egg roll. It's like egg roll surprise: instead of vegetables suddenly it's all choconougaty.

My plan: have giant salad dinner around 6pm. Around 11:00 -- stomach should be in condition required to handle the Mars Bar.

nabiscothingy, Friday, 28 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

This is further cultural proof that the American South was settled by people from Scotland.

earlnash, Friday, 28 May 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have deep fried pizza all the time, but not in batter. That would be disgusting. Much better covered in gravy.
