3 = I am also also a communist but so is redacted

so that's a "yes" from Camaraderie, hardly surprising but noted

rob, Friday, 23 September 2022 14:32 (two years ago)

My dad took me to the Portuguese communist party's festival sometime in the mid 1990's. I did not get a membership but I did get a East German colouring book from some splinter party (this was pre-Die Linke being a thing I think). Disappointingly it had a picture where a cop comes to visit the family and this was viewed as a good thing.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 23 September 2022 14:34 (two years ago)

I think one thing that would put me off joining, even if I was born in 1873 rather than a century later. Would be all the meetings and conferences. I just don't do them so there isn't a party for me!

Mao's Land Reform Movement and the destruction of the Chinese landlord class >>>>> FDR's New Deal times one thousand. Even though the rapid collectivisation that followed was a tragedy and an unmitigable disaster. This would be my flagship policy if I was starting a political party.

xps to calz - my wife's family were landlords in central China a few hundred years ago (their hometown still has their family name attached) but fell on hard times towards the end of the qing dynasty, and were poor enough by the end that her great-grandfather was a communist partisan in the civil war - and is still revered as a martyr in the family. does strike me as ironic that had the family fortune not been lost (dunno how) he would have been on the other side of the landlord/peasant divide.

Being a "die-hard communist" is not a bad thing! Nor does it imply a specific set of views, which are all wrong, or anything else dogmatic like that, etc etc.

My weird rant was about Russia, not communists, but I'm happy to have inadvertently caused so much joy. Sorry, I tried to clarify later (in the Russia thread), but at this point I'm ok if all the communists think that I hold them to be dogmatic Stalinist apologists and also dumb and stupid, whereas it is really I who am dumb and stupid (and weird). I do appreciate all the various perspectives I see on here, whether or not I agree with them, it's a richer place for it.

Once my friend Julia and I were watching a protest march in Paris when we found ourselves engulfed by a crowd of Young Communists, and as we walked faster, trying to get out of the crowd, we found ourselves at the front of it, and then someone shoved a banner into our hands and all of a sudden we were leading the Young Communists down the boulevard, occasionally stopping and kneeling down for group photographs with the banner. Does that count?

TERF Twitter is terribly excited this week because The Communist Party of Great Britain have come out as transphobes, and are challenging left wing non-transphobes with "look even your mates the communists agree with us!"

The Gender Recognition Bill and Equality Law.
Communist Party executive committee STATEMENT (March 2023)https://t.co/lrSDH0wwFH

— Communist Party ☭ (@CPBritain) March 29, 2023

This is hilarious because (1) even under this name there are and have been many different Communist Parties of Great Britain, and it's probably impossible to find an issue they all agree on

and (2) the idea that left-wing people on twitter would be scared that a communist party disagree with them about something is downright insane

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 1 April 2023 14:48 (two years ago)

so what I want to know is - who are this particular party? are they trots? tankies? are they the ones selling papers outside SOAS?

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 1 April 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

A shower of cunts iirc, probably more MI5 members than actual

limb tins & cum (gyac), Saturday, 1 April 2023 14:57 (two years ago)

funny you say that because

During the 1992 general election campaign, Ken Livingstone claimed that the members of the CPGB (PCC) were "MI5 agents".

I would assume most organised movements in any country are tbh

limb tins & cum (gyac), Saturday, 1 April 2023 15:03 (two years ago)

CPGB (PCC) is a different organization from CPB, the CPB is the unreconstructed tankie faction associated with the Morning Star that split from the main CPGB in the late 80s due the latter's move towards Eurocommunism. CPGB (PCC) are the ones who publish Weekly Worker, and have been having their own disagreements over trans issues recently, see this very long article about a meeting they had to discuss one of their members banning someone from a discord chat: https://www.weeklyworker.co.uk/worker/1436/speech-is-political/

soref, Saturday, 1 April 2023 15:20 (two years ago)

it's quite funny seeing them solemnly debating the correct Marxist-Leninist line on message board drama, though

soref, Saturday, 1 April 2023 15:23 (two years ago)

oh so this is CPB not CPGB? The TERFs are all cluelessly calling it GPGB, which must be pissing them off

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 1 April 2023 15:44 (two years ago)

the old CPGB split in the late 80s with the unreconstructed Stalinist faction becoming the CPB, and the Eurocommunist leadership carrying on under the CPGB for a few years before reforming itself as a centre-left think tank after the USSR collapsed. It's modern day successor (after various mergers) appears to be this organization, who's director is the former Lib Dem MP Tom Brake: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unlock_Democracy

CPGB (PCC) has it's origins in an earlier splinter group from the main CPGB, but styled itself as the successor the latter when it was wound up in 1991

tbf leftist politics has always pretty much been internet drama _avant la lettre_

despite never spending much time on tumblr or trans twitter i've picked up on more trans drama (which... has a lot of overlap with leftist drama - latest revive is hardly an isolated incident) than i'd particularly like. the "transamory" kerfluffle is probably the comedy version of it. (there are way too many competitors for the "tragedy" version, unfortunately.)
