I think the large-scale thing I love the most about it is that the characters so obviously cast as "the leads" — Bear and Elora — have gradually revealed themselves to be kinda dumb and not all that sympathetic, while the two who would have been their "sidekicks" on a traditional show, Willie Jack and Cheese, are the smart, deep ones who I want to see more of. (Also, the adults in this show, particularly the moms and aunties, are uniformly incredible, too. I would 100 percent watch a Reno 911-style show just about Big.)

Apparently there are a lot of injokes that are indian orientated according to some of the indigenous podcasts I've listened to.
Have heard a few roundtables on them about the show.
& they are impressed by how some of the actors who are not known for their comedy sides are showing how many more dimensions to their talent there are.

I'm not sure to what extent Taika Waititi is involved still glad he has allowed this to be made. NOt sure if this could have been made without somebody with a name facilitating it. He's credited as a creator so not sure what that means cos this does seem a bit sui generis.

There are a number of jokes and references that I've had to have my wife explain to me (like the pixelated owls).

One of her former grad students grew up on a reservation in oklahoma and has recognized a number of people they know or know of in the background, and this show also explains a ton about their personality and sense of humor.

Harjo often posts fan shoutouts on Insta and there is a lot of love for him & the show from the community for that reason, a lot of joyful #iykyk - it’s really cool

I fucking love this show, it's taught me so much and I respect its brilliant subversion, just perfect really. My kids love it too, I had thought "well this is worth getting behind, it's great to hear more Native voices in media" and I was quite unprepared for it to be my favourite thing in the last five years.

Wow, another great episode, this show is incredible!

Seriously, though, Willie Jack gets the heavy stuff, doesn't she? This ep we finally learn her real name, too, which was a subtle payoff to her hilarious Native in-joke nickname.

My favorite thing about the show, besides it being perfect, is how they keep expanding the circle of adults. People out of the picture, from ghost ancestors to relatives, seamlessly brought in and connected to the story like they were never gone. I might have missed who the woman in prison was, how she was related, but it didn't really matter. As she says to Willie Jack at the end, she's a grandmother, she's an aunty, she's a cousin ...

Wondered something about the end there do they get their shoes back or did they get washed away. Seemed water came in faster than expected. Just would have compounded the situation or ah well another adversity for comradeship to get them through. Quite apart from getting home.

We just watched the '70s episode, which was good; we've been taking our time with this final season.

I was thinking back to the official "Last of Us" podcast, where they talked about how wide they had to cast their net to find a 10-year old Black deaf actor, and even then only managed to find just one. This show, with (essentially) an all-Native cast, has had nothing but great acting across the board from (mostly) relative unknowns. There are about as many Native Americans as there are deaf people, and it couldn't be easy to whittle that block down to the specifics (acting ability, age, gender, etc.) called for by the show, so shout out to the casting director.

We just saw the jailbreak episode. The creators said they always had an ending in mind, and this was their idea of a final season. But with it almost over, nothing about this feels like a final season, and while I am always glad to see a show go out at its best rather than dwindle to its worst, I still wish there were more seasons coming, because the characters and setting has so much potential.

For example, I'm surprised we haven't gotten an episode dedicated exclusively to the goofy horseback spirit.

They find such great actors for the bit parts. The woman playing the hospital receptionist was perfect: skeptical but yet willing to play along with the silliness.

Xpost, yes, they could probably tell a million more great stories with this setting and cast.

Oh, I agree they are leading toward an ending, but they're pretty soft landings that didn't feel imminent, imo. Like I said, I'd rather they end early than late, but there's a lot of stuff that's been introduced this season that I wish we had a little more time with before they go.

I assumed from the beginning of the episode that it was about to loop back to the beginning and it was nice to have a heartfelt story before dropping that other shoe

This episode was so great. That's why it makes me sad it's ending, since these characters are so rich and well-conceived that just letting them be, letting them talk, letting them hang out, together or apart, is enough to sustain an episode.

will be very sad to see show go, but much prefer them choosing to end it while still on a creative high as opposed to dragging on and losing what made it special not advocating it should stop but respect their choice

Several of the episodes this season could be standalone short films. Obv it a much richer experience knowing the character journeys over past 3 seasons. But the storytelling and performances are so compelling, you could just watch Elora and Ethan Hawke without any backstory. Awesome stuff.

Hoping everybody in it is going onto further projects. & somebody else is going to make a non tokenist indigenous show that Red Nation will love. They get pretty scathing to exploitative shows cashing in on indigenous culture.

Will miss this definitely so hope there's something coming to distract that.

This was of course beautiful, though I maintain it feels like it ended a little too soon. On the other hand, I kind of like it ending that way. It feels simultaneously incomplete but satisfying, like we were privy to this special thing that could only last so long before it moved on, like a passing natural phenomenon.

I love how they lowkey had all 4 characters grow in hugely significant ways when you look at them in the finale vs s1e1 but they did it without it feeling growth was the obvious goal idk

Finally got around to watching this (was traveling during the week). A good ending. Someone said online that this was the first time Wes Studi, Graham Greene and Gary Farmer had all been in a scene together, which is crazy.

Kept putting off watching the finale - didn’t really want to get to the end. It was a beautiful episode. Think they had most (?all) the key characters at the funeral. Loved the way the visuals slowly faded out at the end. And that the lead for the episode was Willie Jack, the most overtly community-focused character.
