For example I have not seen the movie Half Baked in two decades and yet I still think about "Yes, Cuban B!" all the time

lol, I had forgotten about that. Kinda reminds me of the exchange from Super Troopers

Will you just order a large, Farva?

-I don't want a large farva. I want a goddamn litre o' cola!

Less of a non-sequitur, but based on a similar misunderstanding (kinda).

"IS THIS SOMETHING YOU CAN SHARE WITH THE REST OF US, AMAZING LARRY?"

In 'All That Jazz' when Ann Reinking and Erzsébet Földi are doing a routine for Roy Scheider, near the end there's a pause in the song and Reinking looks at Scheider and says 'pretty pictures' in the gap, it seems significant but I've no idea why.

There was originally a set-up to that joke and it got cut.

this one is music but I'll still count it. the song "Alive" by Beastie Boys has this line:

"Now here's a little something that you might not like/my DJ's name is Mix Master Mike"

Why would anyone not like Mix Master Mike? did he have some kind of weird history I'm not aware of? or is it the name "Mix Master Mike" itself you may not like? for some reason I keep thinking about it

frogbs, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 13:43 (two years ago)

I would assume that he is saying it confrontationally to other rappers - "you can't rap over Mixmaster Mike beats because we have him."

the Werner Ziiiiiegler scene in Better Call Saul

what's he up to, man?

frogbs, Monday, 31 October 2022 21:05 (two years ago)

when skinner replies "kenobi?!?!" to someone referencing obi-wan. i invoke it a lot in reference to folks with unique names only partially mentioned

global tetrahedron, Monday, 31 October 2022 21:38 (two years ago)

I would assume that he is saying it confrontationally to other rappers - "you can't rap over Mixmaster Mike beats because we have him."

This is explicit in the two lines that follow frogbs’ confounding couplet

Vance Vance Devolution (sic), Monday, 31 October 2022 22:11 (two years ago)

Ok yeah that does make sense

in Kung Pow: Enter the Fist the dude goes into the shop and asks for a pound of nuts and the shopkeeper screams "THAT'S A LOT OF NUTS!!"

dunno if it's a perfect joke or a really fucking dumb one

frogbs, Thursday, 19 January 2023 02:43 (two years ago)

my brother and I often quote the extra playing the dad who screams "ya gotta TAG him DUMMYYYYY" in Bad News Bears all the time.

and often go around singing the Tony Clifton rendition of "Volare" from Man on the Moon.

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Thursday, 19 January 2023 02:52 (two years ago)

and speaking of Super Troopers, I often say "littering ANNNND" and my friend reminds me that Super Troopers isn't funny (but it is)

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Thursday, 19 January 2023 02:53 (two years ago)

Super Troopers is full of lines like that..."I don't want a large Farva"

frogbs, Thursday, 19 January 2023 03:02 (two years ago)

"Why is there a watermelon there?"
"I'll tell you later."

Hideous Lump, Thursday, 19 January 2023 06:53 (two years ago)

"Smiley pies! I haven't had a smiley pie in fifteen years."

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 19 January 2023 08:45 (two years ago)

The original tv version of Up The Junction was on BBC last night and seemed to be full of them. Seemed like whoever wrote the dialogue lifted comments from overheard conversation and put them in actors mouths.

Stevolende, Thursday, 19 January 2023 08:51 (two years ago)

Xp I think Verhoeven satirised the gung ho aspects of 50s sci fi. Haven't read the original book so can't say how bad it is for that.
But do think there is a lot of intentional humour in the film. Not sure to what extent the politics reflect Verhoeven's own, I don't think it's like a Red Dawn or something.

Stevolende, Thursday, 19 January 2023 09:00 (two years ago)

Super Troopers is Verhoeven’s best satire for sure

more crankable (sic), Thursday, 19 January 2023 09:07 (two years ago)

No Farva YOU are under arrest for being a COMPLETE and TOTAL fuck HEAD

"Excuse me, are you reading 'Yes I Can', by Sammy Davis Jr?"

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 January 2023 16:50 (two years ago)

five months pass...

on It's Always Sunny there's a scene where they see a quack doctor named "Dr. Jinx" who is, for some reason, played by P. Diddy. when they walk into his house "The Right Stuff" by New Kids on the Block is playing loudly. One of them describes their symptoms and he goes "I got something that will make you feel better". and then he picks up a bass and starts playing "The Right Stuff"

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 June 2023 03:51 (two years ago)

I saw The Jerk when it was new, and was the only one in the theater laughing uproariously to the "cosmetologist" non sequitur. Amazed to find the clip on youtube.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 28 June 2023 14:08 (two years ago)

That’s awesome, thanks! Had no recollection of it. Sorry if I’m literal-minded, but is it really a non sequitur?

Looking For Mr. Goodreads (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 28 June 2023 14:17 (two years ago)

I thought that as soon as I posted it. It's "a conclusion or statement that does not logically follow from the previous statement," except that it does in Steve's mind, it's just a conflation of meanings. So I dunno...

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 28 June 2023 14:27 (two years ago)

Non sequiturs can be responses that have nothing to do with the conversation or flawed conclusions “based” on what preceded them.

So yes, I think so.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 28 June 2023 14:31 (two years ago)

Oh, okay, didn’t know the second part. TIL…

"How ya doing, Buford"

"There's chicken shit in the oats"

from Daddy's Dyin, Who's got the Will?

sad Mings of dynasty (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 28 June 2023 22:19 (two years ago)

I totally posted a non-non sequitur, it just becomes a non sequitur when it appears in my head unbidden

brimstead, Wednesday, 28 June 2023 22:58 (two years ago)

There's an SCTV sketch about an expensive French restaurant where celebrity gourmands, such as Orson Welles, go to have their most elaborate culinary fantasies realized; wherein the maitre-d' makes the bilingual non-pun "Mr. Welles likes his coq-au-vin prepared with real cocoa".

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 29 June 2023 00:20 (two years ago)

That joke was also in a Three's Company episode, where Chrissy made dinner and Jack (who was a cook) says "That's the first time I've had coq-au-vin made with cocoa."
