Volver
L’enfant
Another Year
A Separation

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:19 (two years ago)

A couple of these are among the most hypnotically gorgeous movies I've ever seen. "Winged Migration," "House of Flying Daggers," "The City of Lost Children" ...

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:22 (two years ago)

Think I've only seen eight...The Fog of War.

clemenza, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:33 (two years ago)

first thought is Orlando tbh

wearing wraparounds (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:35 (two years ago)

winged migration is a stunner

ꙮ (map), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:39 (two years ago)

seen 12 and it might be Paprika, though I suspect I've missed the best ones (e.g., none on Alfred's list)

rob, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:49 (two years ago)

It's kinda tough to get a bean on their flavor profile from this selection

Eric H., Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:53 (two years ago)

Probably one or the other of the two movies listed here that they distributed in '99 -- Run Lola Run or American Movie.

Eric H., Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:54 (two years ago)

I could see revisiting Lola being fun now

Pollock was a big milestone in my realizing I hate biopics

rob, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:59 (two years ago)

lol i've only seen the first four and the last one, how did that happen

rewatched RLR in the past year, it's not great though the intense ninetiesness of it was fun

na (NA), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:00 (two years ago)

most of these could be fairly described as 'oscar bait' yes?

ꙮ (map), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:03 (two years ago)

I rewatched RLR last year, too, and it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it, but it was still fun and funnier than I remembered it. Plus I had forgotten a lot of it.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:03 (two years ago)

Dunno if I'd consider most of these Oscar bait in the cynical sense, but most of these at least boast an imprimatur of quality.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:05 (two years ago)

Volver, con la frente marchita

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:07 (two years ago)

correction, i have seen junebug as well

na (NA), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:17 (two years ago)

Another Year. I do remember quite liking Junebug at the time, so I'll give that one a rewatch this month.

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:43 (two years ago)

The White Ribbon, not because I loved it but because the other four I watched just left vague impressions. Pollock was about as pointless a movie as I've ever seen.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 17:16 (two years ago)

Animal Kingdom or Un Prophete for me

stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 17:32 (two years ago)

Seen about half of these, and there's probably 10 movies here that I'd be happy to rewatch anytime. Will likely be voting Another Year, with A Separation close 2nd

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 17:37 (two years ago)

I've seen 16. Probably going to vote for Persepolis (just recently re-watched it as Ms. T. hadn't seen it) but could just as easily vote for Orlando, City Of Lost Children, Nine Queens, The Illusionist, or A Separation

A Prophet or L'enfant

groovemaaan, Tuesday, 29 November 2022 00:31 (two years ago)

When I saw A Prophet, an old guy sitting two seats from me got up and angrily stormed in and out of the theater like 3 times during especially violent parts.

Chris L, Tuesday, 29 November 2022 01:06 (two years ago)

was he wearing steel-toed boots so it would make a loud stamping sound when he stormed out

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 29 November 2022 01:07 (two years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

I really would not have predicted that winner

winged migration is a stunner

rewatched and it's actually really bad. awful soundtrack, very distracting. robert wyatt appears at the beginning and the end, not his best work unfortunately. some cool footage here and there but really cheesy "story episodes" some of which are obviously staged. we were spoiled by planet earth a few years later. generally really dislike this type of nature documentary now. straight-up unedited flight footage of birds for 90 minutes would be so much better than this random-ass hodgepodge of highlight reels tied together by the most basic interpretation of what a migration "means." herzog got it right in his penguin documentary by focusing on the mystery.

hours of raw nature footage completely ruined by anthropomorphic storyboarding and the most misguided, chintzy music cues you can imagine courtesy of one bruno coulais
