Tomorrow morning I am posting Racebannon records and a Secretly Canadian sampler to Ian Astbury, rock god. Classic or classic?

doom-e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

what?

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i was chatting to ian astbury (rock god) and was going on about racebannon and secretly canadian (label) and he's like 'fuck man, i'm down with that, can you send me some stuff?' and i'm like 'fuck ya, i will'.

i'm also going to send racebannon records to courtney love and her boyfriend (it's my hobby to make racebannon huge, don't ask)

doom-e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

whoa! tell him hi!

i'm totally convinced that the cult is going to be the next retro-hip band (and yeah, i know they're still putting out records, thanks). they are in rotation all the time at a few nyc bars i frequent ...

maura (maura), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm totally convinced that the cult is going to be the next retro-hip band

Yeah, I've been thinking that for the past couple years.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

They can never not be hip. Sez the guy who has reviewed both boxsets. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

this thread is fucking impenetrable which probably means it's about crap garage rock.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

oh WAAAH jess.

it's called 'a fun thread'.

doom-e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

okay okay, why were you chatting to ian astbury?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

okay okay, why were you chatting to ian astbury?

why would you not chat to ian astbury? actually - he lived in hamilton for five years and i lived there for three years. basically the toughest town EVAH (hobbies being: let's see where this blood streak leads to on a Saturday morning). so we bonded over the fact that we both lived in the canadian new jersey, a faded tough-as-fuck town.

ian's very cool. i've met some obnoxious cunts in obscuro-indie-world and here is this rock god, chilling and chatting, and being very cool.

i pulled out the sister album by sonic youth and he said something funny - he came up to thurston after they were interviewed on french television in his fire woman garb, leathers, etc and said 'thurston - i fucking love yer band' and thurston ignored him!!! (thurston is no fun! like jess!)

doom-e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

exactly who is Ian Astbury?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

And how long does it take to lose the stench of Hamilton Bay?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i still have it.

japanese girls walk around with gas masks in that city.

doom-e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

doom-e you smell nice what r u talkin abt!!?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

my favourite jumper reeks of hamilton bay. when i wear that it smells like hamilton!

doom-e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder if Mark's def of 'nice smelling' is a little diff to most ppl's...

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

well - i have to go as i sense this is going to turn into a pot shot thread about me which it was not meant to be and that my morning jacket review ain't going to write itself!

doom0e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

hamilton? aren't the cult english?

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but ian spent his teen years and early twenties in canada. thus - canadians love the cult. they draw huge audiences over there.

doom-e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha ... i'm canadian and only two or three of the several hundred other canadians i've interacted with in my lifetime like the cult.

that said, they do get big crowds here. i don't think canada is specifically a highly "cult"ivated location -- i think anywhere you'll find a population that refuses to let go of the 1980's you'll find a pocket of hardcore cult fans.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i heart the cult. i grew up in a small town where you would hear alternatively electric/love or firewoman out of a car.

where are you from fields of salmon?

doom-e, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

This clarifies things somewhat, but maybe not in a good way: http://www.secretlycanadian.com/secretlycanadian/catalog/sc79.htm

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

This Canadians love the Cult theory is probably true. I have stories.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Exactly how in the sweet shit of life do the Cult actually even come close to qualifying as "fun"?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

This Canadians love the Cult theory is probably true.

Is it true that the Germans love David Hasselhoff?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not German, but I did find a cassette of this in a used shop: http://digilander.libero.it/davidhasselhoff/music/nightroc.htm

I'm still too frightened by the cover to even press play.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Exactly how in the sweet shit of life do the Cult actually even come close to qualifying as "fun"?

They're great fun, or can be! All depends on the song.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Just call me Wolfchild -- for that is my nay-aaame!

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you ask him what was up with that Doors reunion?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to say that Racebannon were, uh, fun, kind of, in short bursts (I think a whole album might stretch my patience somewhat but then I'm one of those heathens who has the same problem with Beefheart, so I suppose my opinion is worthless, as if you didn't already know), but that press release has put me off saying anything nice about them.

So, doom-e, was it your vote that scraped Love Removal Machine into the lower reaches of the NME top 100 singles?

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I can testify that Andrew L has been espousing the virtues of the Cult for many years. I have been mocking him for this, so if certain theories are right he may be able to feel very self-righteous about this soon.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

japanese girls walk around with gas masks in that city.

They do that in every city. I've seen people do it in Halifax, Im sure if there was a Chinese girl in Moncton she'd do it too.

Kim, spill the Cult Stories! Please... Don't make me beg.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

where are you from fields of salmon?

edmonton. definitely gasmask worthy.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

Don't get this thread.

Hey, man, you don't talk to the Colonel. You listen to him. The man's enlarged my mind. He's a poet-warrior in the classic sense. I mean sometimes he'll... uh... well, you'll say "hello" to him, right? And he'll just walk right by you. He won't even notice you. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say, "do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you"... I mean I'm no, I can't... I'm a little man, I'm a little man, he's... he's a great man. I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas...

(it's my hobby to make racebannon huge, don't ask)

Without him, Racebannon would be NOTHING

DJ Mencap, Monday, 12 May 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

i miss doomie.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 12 May 2008 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, so do I. Especially his lack of cynicism.
