According to the local news just now, our Mayor is hiring a hawk to see off the 'rats w/ wings'!

ONE hawk? Isn't that asking a bit much?

What is needed is people with guns and poison and particularly cruel and cunning tracks. Pigeon elimination should proceed with maximum prejudice.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed's going to be one of those guys in forty years time out standing around railing at pigeons while they fly around him and pay him no mind.

My Mum witnessed the hawk flying around the town square in Woking a couple of years ago (London is so behind, yar). The falconer is just supposed to show the hawk about a bit and not let go - that's enough to scare the pigeons off for a couple of weeks - but the hawk must have skipped breakfast that morning because it took to the air and proceeded to bring down a pidge in front of a tiny tot who screamed his little head off. Fantastic. I fucking hate pigeons.

I think pigeon shit causes some disease or another but I don't have any official info on this.

Miss Laura, Friday, 22 November 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it does. Best to avoid eating it.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 22 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i noticed on the trees and posts near trafalgar square there were posters up saying "save the pigeons" and a mobile number to contact. I bet they are getting so many ppl ringing up saying "DON'T BE EFFING STUPID THEY ARE DISEASE RIDDEN RATS WITH WINGS". I am with ed and lucy on this one, eradication is the only way forward...

More information about hypersensitivity pneumonitis then you ever wanted to know.

It's an inflammatory lung disease caused by bacteria in pigeon droppings. This doesn't seem to be the disease I was thinking of so paybe there's another one, too.

Some of the diseases known to be transmitted by pigeons are: chlamydiosis, crytococcosis, Histoplasmosis, Newcastle, Paratyphoid, Salmonellosis, Toxoplasmosis, transmissible gastroenterisits, tuberculosis and Western Equine encephalitis.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 22 November 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Newcastle is a disease?

The only good pigeons are those kept in those funny shed things on top of New York apartment blocks, like in Ghost Dog.
