these pictures are so curiously distressing to me. have my eyes been poisoned by the cursed pix thread? why am i so creeped out by these happy-looking people? i don't think it's envy, because #vinyardlyfe has never even crossed my mind before now. and yet i thirst for deep luscious draughts of their blood! quite strange; i will need to investigate this phenomenon further.

Am I right in suspecting there's some kind of tax dodge going on here?

Wineries and vineyards are notorious for generating operating losses, which then can be written off against the profits generated by your other companies. So, essentially you get to own and run the winery/vineyard just for fun, then sell it later to some other rich person looking for the same tax dodge.

It may also be that the celebrity doesn't own the vineyard or winery, but simply lend their name/brand for marketing purposes

I went to the tasting room for Les Claypool's winery in Forestville, where a buddy was doing some construction work. We were tasting stuff, and I asked the woman behind the counter: "You're not actually allowed to call this champagne, are you?" "Oh yes we are! It's made in Champagne France!"

So it was labeled as his, but I don't think they had anything to do with making it. That kind of stuff happens a lot with celebrity wines.
