the vanilla coke thread

I was a big supporter of the diner-style vanilla Coke (fountain Coke with vanilla syrup) long before Coca-Cola put its Vanilla Coke on the market. And I'm very very pleased with this new product -- the vanilla adds just the right complement to Coke's caramel flavor.

My problem is that I can't stop drinking the stuff. I'm waiting rather impatiently for the diet version to be sold in 2-liter bottles so I can binge on it without gaining weight.

I'm on my third can of the night. Somehow I don't think sleep is in the cards. This feels like college, when I'd go on days-long Mountain Dew benders (when I was in the dorms, I was right across the hall from the soda machine). I don't really want to revisit "the college experience," but hey... here I am sitting in front of a computer at 4:36 a.m., drinking soda, with cable TV on in the background. It's sophomore year all over again.

This is the thread where we talk about Vanilla Coke.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty sure they don't sell it in the UK. If they did I'd definitely try it - sounds like a good idea.

Does it come in a white can?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

vanilla coke + vodka = yum

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 09:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It comes in a red can with cream-colored lettering.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 09:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It's v. good with bourbon too. And dark rum.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I will pick some up tomorrow if i can find some and perhaps report back.

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh.. and I am in the "college experience" so I fear where it will leave me.

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Bizarrely this came up in conversation lately. There's only two places that stock it in Dublin (to the best of available information), and I had a can this morning. Blah Corn Syrup Blah is unsurprisingly the verdict. They have Cherry Coke there as well which is also Corn Syrup, so if I'm right, completely different from the Cherry Coke you can get in England.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It is available in the UK because I bought a can the other night but the shop only had the non-diet version.

David (David), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Blah Corn Syrup Blah is unsurprisingly the verdict.

That's Blah Corn Syrup Blah with vanilla, son.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

room temperature lemon coke tastes like cuba libre. YUMMY

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

it'll be available in london for a good year
before anywhere else as is often the case.
i still dont know if we got coca cola classic
after they changed the recipe in the mid 80's
or indeed if we ever even got the changed version
in the 1st place.

we have cherry though.
the concept of 'diner style' anything is alien to us i would imagine
especiallycoke with some vanilla syrup in.

mmmmmmm though i am looking forward to tasting it in cans.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

had some when i went to canada (actually at a canadian ILXOR's house). I liked it!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

We still get coca cola classic, but the Europe management aren't as paranoid about the debacle that was new coca cola, so we ust call it coca cola.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanilla Coke is AMAZINGWONDERFULSTUPENDOUS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

We never got New Coke. Phew. Mind you Diet Coke with Lemoin is wrong.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't drink much soda, and almost never drink cola. I am more of a Pepsi than Coke person. However, I find something very seductive about Vanilla Coke. I've definitely been drinking it, though I haven't developed a real habit. I'm not even sure how much I like it, but there's something about it. (It's vanilla! But don't they always put some vanilla in?)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It's just creaming soda.

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Icky!

(More seriously: Vanilla Coke = a very fine thing. But I always liked Cherry Coke better.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

a) its coke with perfume in it
b) aspartame is wicked bad for you DONT DRINK DIET SODA

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

aspartame is the single largest undiagnosed food allergy out there. definitely bad.

vanilla coke is very lovely. my band used to go through two litres of it at every practice (largely split between me and the keyboardist). after a while i realized that vanilla coke is somehow even sweeter than regular coke and more toxic -- drinking it late at night was really making me feel gross.

i'd still have vanilla coke over regular coke though ...

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanilla Coke is like cream soda + coke. It's not bad - better than regular Coke, but still not as good as Dr. Pepper or root beer. I wish it was a hair less sweet.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy childhood memories: drinking Dr. Pepper down the shore, maybe before going out for a game of miniature golf.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I think of it as halfway to cream soda. It's good, but I'd usually rather have Coke or cream soda.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The diet version isn't bad at all.

Cherry coke + vanilla coke = mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't taste anything like cream soda!! It tastes like Vanilla Coke!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been a big fan of Cherry Coke, even when it had that weird label.

I've yet to try Vanilla Coke, but will have one today at lunch.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread inspired me to get another Vanilla Coke at lunch. I love the stuff.

Diet version of anything, however = total and utter dud.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, while I don't mind Vanilla Coke, I curse it because it makes finding Jones' Vanilla Cola that much harder now.. and the latter is far, far better.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanilla Coke and Gentleman Jack is as good as drinking gets. I can't drink VC by itself--it seems too decadent, like mainlining maple syrup. Somehow the addition of quasi-high-quality whisky makes it acceptable. Speaking of which, how come Gentleman Jack gets no love? Why isn't it name-checked in hip-hop songs? It's great!

adam (adam), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

adam (adam), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

You should have started this thread earlier! I had 23 review bottles of Vanilla Coke in my house for months that I was at pains to get rid of. I hate to express a controversial opinion, but I thought it was nasty as hell. I am as pro-Madagascar as the next fellow, and I love the old fountain vanilla and cherry Cokes, but Lord. I think that was the only time in history I haven't finished a beverage. I even finished my sample can of Diet Coke With Lemon Pledge.

Consider Coke with vanilla vodka as a better alternative to Vanilla Coke with vodka.

(Jody, where are you looking? The diet version is all over NYC.)

I have a lot more to say on this topic but other matters press.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

(Jody, where are you looking? The diet version is all over NYC.)

I know, but not in 2-liter bottles (which are significantly cheaper than six-packs). I've had the can and the 20-oz. bottle.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I even finished my sample can of Diet Coke With Lemon Pledge.

I concur. The Lemon Coke is horrid.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm. I've seen it but I don't remember where. Maybe they're rolling it out uptown first. I will keep you posted.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I love the Lemon Diet Coke more so than the regular flavor. The Diet Vanilla tastes like a combo of Liquid Paper and Cream Soda. yuck!

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Liquid Paper??

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I will say one thing in favor of Diet Coke With Lemon: when I tried it, I actually did make that face that the girl in the ad is making!

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

what about blue pepsi? now *that's* horrifying. sweeter than vanilla coke but with a horrifying chemically-yours raspberry taste to it.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Tippex/Whiteout

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

It's quite good, but I still default to regular Coke.

My mum cut Diet Coke (and aspartame) out of her diet, and now she has more energy and deosn't lose her keys as much. FWIW.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I drink lots of water. It's real fun.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah why is it when you go to someone's house and they offer you drinx andf you say water they look at you like you've told them to stick their hospitality up their arse? do humans not drink water anymore?

bob zemko (bob), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

In some languages, "water" actually does mean "stick your hospitality up your ass".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

it's worse to go to someone's house and ask them for something to drink and they say "we've got water ..." but you know there's better stuff in the fridge that they're saving for themselves.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I too am not a fan of soda AT ALL but am strangely in love with vanilla coke. Am curious to try it hot with rum. Wish they had a no-caffeine version.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Funny this is coming up today, as a co-worker brought in cans of diet Vanilla Coke for us to try. I was surprised to find I liked it, especially as I HATED Vanilla Coke regular - too sickeningly sweet. Still, cherry is the only flavor Coke's gotten 100% right so far.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanilla Coke is on sale everywhere in Australia. It's okay, but I prefer normal Coke by a long shot. Coke w/ lemon is absolutely vile. Yech.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i take back my orignal statement.
vanilla coke and vodka = bad
coke and vanilla vodka (stoli) = GOOD!

this is good news, i liked vanilla coke

although rum nearly ruined it for me

the sir weeze, Saturday, 19 May 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

I think it has just vanished from Belgian shops. It's all Regular, Light and (especially the last couple of months) Zero over here. (I don't think the coffee-influenced Blak is/ever has been very available either)

StanM, Saturday, 19 May 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

Vanilla coke is pretty terrible. It's like drinking sugary cola, which is bad enough already, but to this they have added just a kiss of nasty.

they have vanilla coke in those freestyle machines. I'm pretty sure I've seen bottled vanilla coke around but I might just be making that up

crüt, Friday, 23 August 2013 17:32 (twelve years ago)

huh! you can get it many places here. what's a freestyle machine btw? the thing in a restaurant or w/e where you put a cup under a nozzle thing and press it against a little piece of plastic and then the soda starts coming out?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 23 August 2013 17:36 (twelve years ago)

freestyle sodas taste kinda weird though because they use a different kind of syrup than other fountain drinks. also all the drinks come out of the same nozzle so everything vaguely tastes like everything.
