I NEED PANTS.

Can someone please tell me where I can get trousers - proper dress pants that I can wear to work, not jeans or courderoys - that have AT LEAST a 33 inch inseam that aren't going to cost $100+ a pop? Every single pair of pants at H&M are too short for me. I try Urban Outfitters and they are even shorter. Express is sometimes long enough but their fabric is hateful.

I CANNOT BEAR TO WEAR SKIRTS ALL THE TIME. FREE ME FROM THIGH HIGH SLAVERY.

Thank you.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this was going to be about pants.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I figured putting in a culturally ambivilous phrasing wuold increase hits and thus chances of finding LONG TROUSERS.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I am simultaneously relieved and disappointed that this thread was started by an American and not a UKer.

Ally, have you tried Macy's sales?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

you may have increased your hits but you may also have increased your misery--people from the UK etc. may start answering that there are lots of long trousers suitable for you where they are but that you cannot reach them because you are too far away.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Unlikely, RJG. Only on Saturday did I try on a pair of ankle swingers masquerading as Longer Length in Oasis.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

you may have increased your hits but you may also have increased your misery--people from the UK etc. may start answering that there are absolutely no long trousers suitable for you anywhere in the world but that that doesn't matter as you could not reach them even if there were because you are too far away.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

There are no pants to be found :(

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"Every single pair of pants at H&M are too short for me."

How can this be? They are made for statuesque Swedish women, not unlike yourself, minus the Swedish part, obviously...

The H&M pants are usually a foot too long for me...

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

DOWN WITH PANTS!

ron (ron), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

minus the Swedish part, obviously

Ally "Agnetha" Kearney. It could happen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I NEED PANTS.

You think this makes you special?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i, too, know the pain of the short pant.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I never said I was special, just needy.

I don't know what it is about me, I think I am freak shaped, Mary. I'm really not particularly tall so I don't know WHY pants don't fit me. Plus also I have noticed an alarming trend of really wide legged pants, which only look good if they are dragging the ground. So then pants need to be even longer!

I don't have this same issue with jeans, which I can find in incredibly long lengths.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Why don't you make some yourself out of curtains? I have been thinking this would be a good idea for a long time (then again see the soxbra for my other examples of good ideas. I have since then decided sockbras may become a bit too sweaty).

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, make curtain trousers and then wear them to sing-a-long-a-Sound Of Music.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

bitch i told you - on our cross cuntry tour of luv it is naked ass only

Queen G (Queeng), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

banana republic?
kenneth cole?
j crew?

maura (maura), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Banana sells trousers for $98! That being said they're usually too short for me. I like their skirts tho.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

they do free alterations, and i think some of their pants are available in different lengths ...

maura (maura), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

They do free alterations??? THAT I did not know. Thank you!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

but what're they going to do to alter them...sew a section curtain onto each trousleg?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

That could be a good trend.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally gave up wearing pants a long time ago because I'm so f'in tall. Runway models are tall but pants IRL are made only for petite sweets. But I love love love wearing skirts and tights so I don't have this problem.
I got my last pair of dress pants at Express, but I get weak in the knees looking at pants in J Crew.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

y'all should just have parts of your shins removed to make easy the hunt for fitting trousers.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Banana Republic also has some 10% off deal going on now.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I should get leg surgery like Ethan Hawke's character in Gattaca (or whatever the hell that movie was called).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Banana has some really nice shiny suits and velvet stuff but what the fuck am I going to do with that? "Hmmm, what shall I wear to Food Emporium to buy cat food? Oh, I know, the satin tuxedo!"

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Old Navy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Army Surplus.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

How tall are you, Ally? I am a freak in the opposite direction - 5'7", 26 or 27" inside leg. My ex-wife was about an inch shorter than me, with a 32" inside leg. She never had any problem here - I think 33" is pretty standard in the UK.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

5'8"

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Why try men's trousers, suit, or even a men's tailor. You'd have to find the right cut, but doesn't everybody. Even off the peg men's suiters normally have an adjustment service except in the crappiest of shops.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't you reckon they'd be too baggy though? I've never tried it but with jeans they were always quite big.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Get fat.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

loose but not baggy, got to be worth a go though, Id have thought there would be more of a problem with being loose at the waist than in the leg. I think they'd work better as part of a suit than on their own. Worth a try?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, right, why didn't I think of that. Get fat, brilliant idea! I've gained weight anyway, it doesn't help. And the problem is the waist mainly, yeah but the legs tend to be very large too?? I don't know. Maybe I should just buy a damned belt already.

Ooh! Or I could start wearing men's pants with suspenders and tiny tank tops and a fedora in a quaint femme boy 30's look! No belts necessary!

I hate belts. I always lose them somehow.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

(I'm sorry but I'm posting a lot to avoid the soul sucking evil that is my job. My other activity to avoid work is to carefully straighten a paperclip and then remold it into a spiral, which has resulted in puncture wounds on my fingers, so this is safer. I mean, honestly, would you want to review the fucking rent roll?)

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The jazz dance braces, fedora look could work. You'd have to get the trousers taken in a lot, or be creative with safety pins avoid looking like a hassidic clown.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU WANT TO AVOID LOOKING LIKE A HASSIDIC CLOWN?????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

From the UK, so shipping may eat up any savings, but a tall friend recommended Long Tall Sally to me. 36" and 38" inseams! But it looks like the smallest size is a 10 (that's no different from an American 10, right?) which does me no good.

Once in a while Express will have a decent pair of pants, but you do have to sift through a lot of polyester crap.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha! That's my new phase. No more tarty NYC girl, no more gothy business woman - HASSIDIC CLOWN!

Seriously I think an American 10 is MUCH bigger than a British 10. Or vice versa. I forget but one is much larger.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

they don't have a chart on the site! I know the difference between European sizes (where I am a 40 or thereabouts) and American (where I am a 2) but what does English size 10 mean? Help!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going from memory here, but I think it's somewhere around 34-26-36.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

english 10 = american 14

minna (minna), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

english 10 = american 6

minna (minna), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

(the second one is right)

minna (minna), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

So was I close?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Gotta' go to work, work all night, search for underpants, hey!
We won't stop 'till we have underpants, Yum tum yummy tum, hey!

Underpants Gnome, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

euro 40 = american 2??
this does not tally with my past experience.

martin - yes i think so

minna (minna), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

hm, Ally I am 5'9 & most of my pants come from J Crew (eh, the half of my wardrobe that's not from thrift shops is from there..).. tall size has 35" inseam. Plus they take returns on like anything, anytime, which is nice. Now, if I lived in nyc and could go to tons and tons of cool stores.. it might be different.. What about Katayone Adeli ? I think they're pricey but you can pick up some on Bluefly sometimes.

I found some 34" leg flares at New Look and Dorothy Perkins do a good tall range, but it's sadly all sold out. Pah.

Madeleine (Madeleine), Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops. I mean Dorothy Perkins

Madeleine (Madeleine), Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU WANT TO AVOID LOOKING LIKE A HASSIDIC CLOWN?????

Let's see you start rockin' the long curls, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

In order for me to rock the long curls, I'd have to walk around pants-less. Joei would not approve.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

My girlfreind has a pants issue too. She resolved it by getting jeans and removing the top part of the jeans that has the nbelt loops. She is a seamstress.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

In order for me to rock the long curls, I'd have to walk around pants-less. Joei would not approve.

Information about, apparently, Dan's luxuriant pubic patch: classic or dud?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

euro 40 = american 2??
this does not tally with my past experience.

You're right; I checked my tags last night and my last purchase with european sizing (Miu Miu dress) was a 34, which I thought would be too big but turned out right.

Here is a proper size chart; serves me right for not googling it in the first place.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Hanley's girlfriend is Mariah!

I'm an American 4, sometimes 6. SO I guess I'm a UK 8? So confusing. They don't have my shoe size listed, I had to do math to get it! Hrmph.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm Ally, after Thanksgiving I will have my car and will be looking for company for the long drive to Woodbury Common, where they may have some pants for you.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay! Count me in.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Daria G a relation of Dario G?

(ahahahahahaha boy I am the funniest person in the world tonight!!! NB this joke will probably make no sense to poor Daria but NMEH?)

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

She is mariah? THe pants dont really end up asscrack displaying or anything. She just has a shorter crotch to navel than most women, or she just doesnt want to wear her pants at her armpits

Mike Hanle y (mike), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I find pants to the armpits very charming, Mike.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

If we go to Woodbury Common, can I come too?

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, explain it to me ! well, I could just google & figure out. i've just been putting 'daria g' instead of 'daria gray' b/c I lost the password for the username 'daria gray' & ilxor isn't letting me reset.

daria arGento, Friday, 22 November 2002 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

What Rosemary said. Can we also go to the Japanese "mall"? Yay cars! Joyriding and etc.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 22 November 2002 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, rose/Mary, we will all go to Woodbury Common and Mitsuwa Mart and lez it up and then all drive over a cliff together holding hands after Thanksgiving.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Dario G = hit eurodance popstar DJ ting.

Graham (graham), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds like a movie!

"Yes, rose/Mary, we will all go to Woodbury Common and Mitsuwa Mart and lez it up and then all drive over a cliff together holding hands after Thanksgiving. "

At last: something to look forward to!

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 23 November 2002 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

can we get bubble drinks there tho? and weird guys who want to crash your apartment? and adam sandler movies?

(seriously, if felicity is serious, so am i - i'm there)

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 23 November 2002 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing wrong with Adam Sandler movies! (Translation: I have never remotely wanted to watch any until Paul Thomas Anderson's new one, Punch Drunk Love, but he's excellent in that.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 23 November 2002 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitsuwa!!!

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
does anyone else have a pants size problem. i've dropped to a 36 waist thank god but my length hovers annoyingly between 32 and 34. it depends on the pant of course, but very often i find that a 32 is too short and a 34 is way too long. which means i have to buy the 34 and look like a raver kid or take it in to get hemmed which is expensive and annoying and besides i'd really prefer not to have to haggle with a seamstress in french

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 10 January 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

long is better than short

Victoria April (Mary), Saturday, 10 January 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i know but perfect is better than long

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 10 January 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Just rock the raver kid look. Accesorize.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 10 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Last trousers I bought, it cost me £2, I think it was, to get them taken up. Ask in a dry cleaner, they are often cheap. I always need to do this, as I have a ridiculously short 27" inside leg.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 10 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Am, can't you get your pants hemmed at the dry cleaners? Should be less than $10.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha super time delay xpost)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, just TRY and find any 36" inseam pants ANYWHERE

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

being a fatass doesn't help (but then it doesn't help most things).

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with you, Amateurist, but also with waist size. Depending on the brand and cut, I wear anywhere from a 32 to a 36, and length either 32/34.

I've given up and just cut off the extra length. Which is very mid-90s, but c'est la vie.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 10 January 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)
