are there other slaws besides cole? Like that weird salad with shredded carrots & raisins, isn't that a sort of slaw?

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 17 February 2023 01:08 (two years ago)

yeah they probably have a licorice slaw that tastes kinda like urine, but in a good way

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 17 February 2023 01:28 (two years ago)

I favor a mixed green & purple. I often add pecans.

Vinegar or mayo is the far more important choice (it’s vinegar).

my coleslaw story is that in grade school, i did not like coleslaw. i was the smallest person in the school, and so the mysterious woman who only appeared during lunch used to try to help me out by constantly hovering over and yelling at me about how i wasn't eating enough. one day, coleslaw was on the menu and i did not eat the slaw. my personal lunch advisor forced me to eat the coleslaw. i threw it up and then she gave me recess detention. i do not like coleslaw pollslaw, voted noslaw

that's a fucked up story KM. sorry you had to cope with that abusive shit when you were just a kid.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Friday, 17 February 2023 17:33 (two years ago)

oh, it wasn't so bad! i mean, it was bad in the moment, but not much lasting damage other than hating coleslaw. a lot of other kids had it worse at that school and that environment, for various reasons. on the rare occasion that i tell the coleslaw story irl, it has more of a comedic edge due to my unparalleled ability to simulate puking noises

I will drink any color coleslaw but brown

Almost always ask for a different side though unless it's a diff twist like spicy slaw or tarty slaw.

Hate KFC's

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 February 2023 17:54 (two years ago)

like it on fish tacos and fried chicken sandwiches

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 17 February 2023 18:02 (two years ago)

xpost i think that's one thing about coleslaw, is that you could drink it

I was just reminded of the NYT crossword thread from 17 years ago.

"some burger toppings" are not "slaws," at least at any cookout i've been to. i would be shocked if handed a burger outfitted with "slaws."

is it still a slaw without mayo or is it “cabbage salad”

not too strange just bad audio (brimstead), Friday, 17 February 2023 19:46 (two years ago)

I've long-despised kohlrabi and thought of it as "the shitty alternative to cabbage" but recently had kohlrabi kimchi and it was stupendous

Blessed Bloated Burdened (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 17 February 2023 20:08 (two years ago)

My opinion is that coleslaw requires creamy mayo-based dressing to be considered coleslaw

And also my opinion is that cabbage salad with a vinegar-based dressing and no-mayo is superior to coleslaw

But coleslaw is delicious. I don't like red cabbage in coleslaw or cabbage salad (or in any context, really)

Blessed Bloated Burdened (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 17 February 2023 20:10 (two years ago)

coleslaw on a pulled pork sandwich is nice

quick-pickled cabbage, which is basically just vinegar-soaked, is also good on some things
the german braised red cabbage is also good, and also not coleslaw imo

mh, Friday, 17 February 2023 20:55 (two years ago)

i like slaw on my dogs

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 17 February 2023 21:06 (two years ago)

slaw dog sounds nice

mh, Friday, 17 February 2023 21:08 (two years ago)

slaw on dogs and pulled pork are indeed nice.

also in a 'barbecue sundae' which is basically a milkshake cup filled with beans pork and other shit and slaw

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 February 2023 21:27 (two years ago)

Please note, an experienced practitioner of slaw-making is called a slawyer.

Someone who initiates and develops different types of slaw is properly called a slegislator.

HOWEVER, a slawyer is not to be confused with Slawer, the famous thrash-metal band whose songs are all about thinly sliced cabbage.

Thank you for your attention to these important distinctions.

Mark G, Friday, 17 February 2023 22:37 (two years ago)

breaking the slaw, breaking the slaw, breaking the SLAW!!

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 17 February 2023 22:41 (two years ago)

disappointed this poll wasn't epistemological re coleslaw ... how can you say whether a specific instance of coleslaw is good coleslaw when you also don't like coleslaw ... then we can debate this for hundreds of posts and it would be like my life 10 years ago

Yeah, coleslaw on a not-dog is my favorite summer lunch.

The best coleslaw i've ever had is from the health food store in Glen Cove, Long Island. They have a bunch of different varieties, all great, some with vinegar and some with vegannaise, but my favorite one is the fiesta slaw which has neither afaict. Attempts to make my own have been moderately successful at best. Aimless OTM about mixed green & purple + nuts.

The field divisions are fastened with felicitations. (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 01:35 (two years ago)

voted i don't care about the color but what are these white and yellow options?

i like throwing some umeboshi paste into a slaw with kewpie and rice vinegar fwiw

I'd hate coleslaw if the only version I knew wa the kind you get with like, KFC and such, where its that dreadful finely diced cabbage/carrot sloshing in gallons of horrid, greasy and over-sweet fake mayo.

A proper coleslaw made with fresh white and red cabbage, carrot, finely juliiened red capsicum, with a VERY light dress of egg mayo/hot mustard/lemon juice? Delish.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 1 March 2023 01:22 (two years ago)

I only ever make vinegar slaws (and don’t think of them as being of the “cole” variety, fwiw), but that sounds delicious.
