The Fluorescent Light Glistens Off Your Head is pretty good imo

Depends on the era. Some of these are truly representative of Early Dilbert, while others are quintessential Shitty Bigot Dilbert.

Dilbert Turns 88

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Sunday, 26 February 2023 21:01 (two years ago)

xp do you think? tbh I was struck by the fact that the tone of the book titles didn't seem to change at all, despite his decent into crankery (because he was always a crank but didn't have the medium/culture to fully express that until later on in his career?)

to give credit to Adams, Dilbert is a very funny character design. There are people on twitter making ironic Dilbert jokes to dunk on Scott Adams, but the ubiquity of these is partly because Dilbert is a funny character design. I remember reading something Adams wrote where he was quoting a guy who suggested that Dilbert's design (no visible eyes, no mouth) was some kind of commentary on the voicelessness of the American worker or something, and Adam's was dismissive of this interpretation, but even if it wasn't a conscious thing on his part the fact that he has no eyes or mouth is part of what makes the character work, this hapless mute like Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton. I always thought that the main reason the Dilbert cartoon flopped was because they gave him a visible mouth.

Just saw this:

Adams said Monday that the strip, which first appeared in 1989, will only be available on his subscription service on the Locals platform.

“Dilbert” is effectively dead, Peterson said.

Dilbert Gets Made Redundant

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 18:38 (two years ago)

if it's only for subscribers and not the general public, I imagine Dilbert will be joining a militia

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 18:43 (two years ago)

i didn't see "teamwork means you can't pick the side that's right" before, actually that's prob the one

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 18:45 (two years ago)

how many years since this prick actually worked in an office?

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 18:46 (two years ago)

like anthony kiedis.. spent four hours under the bridge downtown, and the next 30 years singing about it

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 18:49 (two years ago)

"office culture" angle largely superficial even in its heyday tbh; this line from the article neil s posted in the other thread is starkly otm about its real premise:

The central message of Dilbert is that everybody is stupid except you, if I’m remembering correctly. It’s a popular message, which I presume helped make it a popular strip.

Freedom’s just another word for people finding out you’re useless

With the knowledge of who this guy is (and even without!) this is the most nazi shit

I sent him an idea about 20 years ago, and he used it on one of his weekend strips.

Thought I'd get that one out of my system

Mark G, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 20:33 (two years ago)

a while back I did re-read a bunch of Dilberts by year to see if they were still funny or if I just liked it because I was 13. the early strips were occasionally good, but it seemed to get noticeably better right around the time he started putting his email address on the strip. in retrospect it's pretty clear a lot of his good "jokes" were just things that were emailed to him, in fact I'm pretty sure he admitted that at some point

Still Pumped from Using the Mouse
Fugitive From the Cubicle Police

these two i remember the cover art of pretty clearly, think they were probably lying around my house when i was a kid

dilbert of that era was always mildly, blandly funny in the way that newspaper comics are, same deal as garfield or whatever. dont think ive looked at any strips from the past 20 years except when people link them now because its doing the crank stuff

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 21:01 (two years ago)

xpost yeah my 'joke' was brilliant
