Hmm. Maybe young Macbeth and older Lady Macbeth?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 6 March 2023 16:15 (one year ago) link

would about 40 be considered young? he has to be old enough to deliver the 'tomorrow and tomorrow' soliloquy with a sense of conviction, so a truly young pup wouldn't fit the part. but macbeth is no king lear. i like the idea of lady macbeth a few years older than macbeth.

early middle age. they have to still be hot.

difficult listening hour, Monday, 6 March 2023 17:14 (one year ago) link

(they are yr favorite friends and everyone else's, the couple you are envious of, the most successfully in-love people you know. it doesn't even occur to you they're anything but future)

Poll options fatally flawed i guess

he's lucky shakespeare offers him this one moment of dignified clarity; he is a baffled, surly heel, whose claim to royalty is a low enough bar for the new king jim to clear well

imago, Monday, 6 March 2023 17:19 (one year ago) link

Denzel is in his 60s, still hot obviously

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Monday, 6 March 2023 17:19 (one year ago) link

they're hardly the most successfully in-love people, the banquet scene is one of the funniest in all Shakespeare as she tries and fails to explain his increasingly idiotic conduct, eventually they just miss each other completely and drift into their own mad spheres of death

imago, Monday, 6 March 2023 17:22 (one year ago) link

denzel+frances both v qualified. did not love movie's ostentatious austerity but it was an aesthetic i guess.

difficult listening hour, Monday, 6 March 2023 17:23 (one year ago) link

yeah imago it is a tragedy

difficult listening hour, Monday, 6 March 2023 17:23 (one year ago) link

he ends up pretty down on the concept of future too iirc

difficult listening hour, Monday, 6 March 2023 17:24 (one year ago) link

it's the least tragic of his tragedies by far. it is a witchy entertainment for the new monarch (which also cheekily PROMOTES witchcraft in its own sly way - THAT is the fun dynamic)

imago, Monday, 6 March 2023 17:25 (one year ago) link

the end is pure patriotic 'merge the thrones, hurrah!' celebration. the most tragic scene by far is the murder of Lady Macduff and her son, who in one scene manage to be by far the most likeable and human characters in the play

imago, Monday, 6 March 2023 17:28 (one year ago) link

They’re meant to be young enough as I learned it, there’s a mention of a miscarriage somewhere in the text. Think you can do anything with adaptation though at this stage and it works, have seen and liked productions with both old and young.

Btw the other day I was in a ladies’ in a theatre and they had “Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, making the green one red'” printed on a mirror there - could have done without this tbh

Are you kidding, Hamlet is about as tragic, King Lear the best by a mile ofc

Only one film adaptation has Keith Chegwin in it though.

They have to be young enough that their ambitions make sense, they have to seem like they're "still up-and-coming".

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 6 March 2023 20:12 (one year ago) link

Nicol Williamson was 46 when he played Macbeth in 1983, not sure if that counts as old or young?

soref, Monday, 6 March 2023 20:22 (one year ago) link

The Fassbender version is so bad. God alive.

Slaughter of Macduff's family (and sundry reports of Macbeth's casual butchery maiming poor Scotland) aside, the tragedy is pretty self-contained aye. It's the claustrophobia though and their relative youth that makes it so tragic.

So, I think I'm in the 'young enough to up-and-coming' camp. As Macbeth says, he has his 'golden opinions', the dude is the King's fiercest warrior. Why man, why.

This is probably common knowledge but these coins, struck in Holland in 1605 to commemorate the stifling of the gunpowder plot and the expulsion of the Jesuits are pretty great. Look like the innocent flower, and all that.
